how to check bearings when pan is off

im hearing a hissing noise coming from my oil pan , i posted the problem in a forum, and was told to drop the pan and check the bearings, but just what am i looking for? and do i need a special tool, or can it just be eye balled?if the bearing do need to be replaced can i do it with the motor in or do i have to pull it?thanks for the help.

ya you can change them in the car but you have to take the head off and basicly everything else but i guess just need to pull the caps off but i would have some one with some experience helping you. good luck

You're looking for gashes, gouges, cracks, burns, uneven wear, smurfs, overlapping, and things of that nature.
Check your oil pan and the oil for bits of metal as well.

Also check the oil pump screen we found a bunch of bits of bearings in there on a friends of mine.
