My dad and I were working on my car (97 Eclipse GST) last night and the key WASN'T turned on. Well anyways we heard this weird noise like the fuel pump was turning on like it does when you turn your key before you start the car. It did it every 15 minutes only a guess but I'd love to catch the sound on film but it's so hard to tell when it's gonna do it. Any thoughts anyone?

We didn't take out the battery at all so I don't know what to think on this one and it drives but I'm not driving it now because it's winter and I need a couple other parts before I start drive it in the summer.

Let me guess, the sound came from the engine bay roughly and if you could pin point it it would be under the battery?

I'm going to say it's the check valve on the charcoal canister. :thumb:

Actually my dad was putting on my new exhaust for the car and he said it was coming from underneath the car and it sounded like it was from the gas tank. It happened to me when I was putting on my rims and I got underneath and listened. Once again sounded like it was coming from the gas tank. Which would make sense to the sound but why would it make the noise if the key isn't on?

Just double check the check valve on the charcoal canister, it's dealing with pressure build up in the tank. If it's what I'm believing that it is what I'm thinking, I had the same issue and it was discussed before.

When low on gas and you take the cap off, does a lot of back pressure flow out as you loosen the cap?

Just kidding haha.

I get this sometimes when I go to get gas. What is this supposed to mean?

When you rule out the probably, the improbable becomes suspect. That being said there is a ghost and he hates you. Things I have witnessed with these cars lead me to believe they are alive.

We were working on my buddies Spyder one night and the car was off the whole night, never turned on, we walk up to it and we all heard it "breathing" in and out. Then the next night the car blew off randomly, or that's what it sounded like. I also watched spout of steam randomly shoot out from it. All times we never had the car running that day.

It's a ghost and he hates us.

It means the check valve could be worn which is supposed to vent excess pressure into the charcoal canister.

I ended up turning my check valve around and both the sound and excess pressure build up went away. I have not taken notice to an excess of vapors either.

hmmm I might just have to look into and make sure that my check valve isn't worn or malfuctioning or at the very least make sure it is pointing in the correct direction.

Kinda creepy... LOL

well even if there are ghosts in our cars, mine just likes to torment me with small problem after small problem, slowly driving me crazy!

mine used to do this. Ever since I deleted my evaporative purge stuff, it stopped. I'll second the "bad check valve" because it's definitely the diaphragm in the check valve. At least in my case.
