How to tell if this is an evo 3 16g

Im talking to a guy about an evo 3 16g right now and his pics have no serial numbers. He said the previous owner shaved them off when he coated it. So my question is how can you tell if its a mhi e3 without the serial number?

You won't be really able to tell unless you take it apart and measure the compressor wheel..But I can give you some tips that will help you narrow it down.

If it has a flat plate below where the waste gate bolts to..It's a ebay evo 3..

If the compressor fins are 2 fins, by 6 wheels, it's a 16g..

One usual give-away is if the ebay has a wategate actuator with an adjusting bolt mechanism. If the wastegate is just an arm with nothing on it it's the ones on an MHI (but they can be removed and placed on an ebay version). Another thing to look for the flapper on ebay turbos are different than MHI but again, a turbine housing can be removed/changed.

Like 4lurker saud the wastegate are on the inside on the turbo is different on ebay and mhi turbo's..The ebay one is a dinky little rod for the WG flapper..The MHI one is a beefy non round rod type..

On the eBay ones the WGA rod is straight, on an MHI one the WGA rod has a hockey-stick bend to it. There's nothing wrong with the hot side from an eBay evo3 16G, but the rest of it is crap. It's possible to make a good E3 16G with a 14b center and shaft, eBay hot side, and 16G compressor wheel and cover. Pretty hard to verify without a total disassemble, though.

That turbine housing is an ebay one, that's definitely sure. As for the center section/blades, measurements will have to be made as rebuilds use parts from anything that fits

It's a 16g for sure..It's got a ported hotside on it..The wg flapper arm appears to be an ebay special..

you can tell by the wastegate, the rod coming out of the waste gate will be a strait rod if its a real evo3 16g, on a ebay 16 the rod on the wastegate will have threads in the middle of it with a adjusting nut. its simple as that.

The wastegate arm can always be replaced with an ebay WG and arm..But the WG flapper arm does look ebay ish..

I second that. 100% ebay turbine housing. Chances are good that the rest of it is too.

I have a real hard time bringing myself to buy a used turbo especially one that I can't accurately identify or touch with my own hands to inspect it. I'd keep looking if I were you
