How to remove a 1G front bumper for FMIC

Well being new to these little monsters, I have a simple question for some long time DSMer's. Where do I start when I have to remove the front bumper to install a FMIC that santa brought? I have never had the nose off of one of these so any instructions are welcome. (1990 Talon) Thanks to all!

Easy. On the front, you have to take the marker lights lens, clear turn signal lights lens and center emblem piece off to expose the 10mm mounting bolts that holds the upper metal retainer over the bumper cover.

Underneath are the same 10mm bolts that allows removal of the lower part of the bumper cover from the holding frame.

On the corners are also 10mm bolts that mounts the corners of the bumper cover to the chassis, but have to remove the inner fenders to get to these.

All bolts out and off comes the bumper cover.

Spray some pb blast on some of those as they may break when you try to remove them.

The five bolts in the middle between the headlights , the four on each headlight +1 screw each to remove the side marker. Three under the headlights to crash beam each side, Two under the fender each side. And if you still have the under splash I believe it is like 8 bolts there, and two clips for the wheel wells.

Spray some pb blast on some of those as they may break when you try to remove them.

This x10. Spray them, let them soak, them spray them again. I just recently took mine off, and even with pb blaster I still twisted the heads off of a couple.

Since its sitting and been abandoned almost since it came home it has time to sit so I will get some PB and shoot it to it daily. I appreciate the list of everything from all of you and as soon as its not snowing outside I can start to take that bumper cover off. Does PB hurt paint, anyone???

No, but chances are marty they will break its a very old car and I learned the elements take there toll.

Nope, it won't hurt paint. You'll want to get the car in a warm garage (as warm as possible) before you try take those bolts out. If they're cold they're almost guaranteed to snap.

I'm glad that you chimed in Victor and Erik. Its gonna have to wait for better weather now since we have snow on the ground and I don't have a shop (bummer, was gonna build one then went thru divorce, so no shop). The tip about being warm is what i will wait for, warmer weather, but will start PB Blasting them asap. And Victor, if I snap any of the bolts off, are there replacement items available from a hardware store or something like that? Much appreciation to ALL!

Stm has after market one's.

I have a few of those lying around most small ones in bay are the right thread but a bit longer, depending on the location of the bolt.

And with that inner shoulder below the bolt head so you don't crush the plastic material on the cover when you tighten down the bolt.

I'd head out to a yard and find some busted up DSM's and grab as much hardware, extra stuff and similar just to be safe off of these units.

Bet you can find some extra covers also for cheap if yours is split at the bottom.

Very cool and very helpful. This snow and cold weather will get out of here before to long and since I work at a PostOffice, it will be after the first of the year before I can go "junk yarding" since I have to deliver all of you guy's Christmas presents!!! I am printing these off so I have instructions "in hand" when I am tackling this project. Lets see, the only other things I need to do before we get into bracket racing again this spring is 1) Clutch, mine is ok but needs to be much firmer if I am going to race 2) Pass side inner CV boot is tore. Looks like I caught it nice and early so I ordered a boot kit and 3) I have to pull 5th gear off and replace its syncro and put a new/used end cover on, mine is cracked and numerous parts were in the bottom. Good thing I am good with tranny's but I haven't figured out how to get the pin out of the rail for 5th. All else is yet to be determined and fluids changed with the "good stuff" that Santa also used my CC on. (Thanks son, hehehe).

Does that metal piece inbetween the headlights sit on top of the bumper, or under it between the bumper and the bumper support?

Sits on top. It's the metal strip itself that holds the cover to the inside bumper.
