How to make Sea Foam

I ran into this on evom. I just had to share it.

Mix using naptha/camping fuel (5 parts), 99% pure isopropyl alcohol (1 part), and mineral oil (3 parts).

Uhhh... $1.83 vs. $9-$11 a can isn't what I would call the same price.

And if the ingredients are correct (they came from the MSDS), and don't require special processing during production...why wouldn't it work?

home made 'witch's oil' ... ! But, have to ask: why are some of the member's vehicles getting so dirty that one has to depend on this stuff? Dirty Injectors, dirty manifolds ... gee, is crappy fuel being all the time?

Thats what I was thinking. I'm betting alot of the additives and cleaners we buy usually just come down to simple ingredients at the right % mixture.

.. I wouldn't want to store it though - stuff might start to be breaking down to were it'll all be tuning into a gooey varnish loaded product. The alcohol alone evaporates so quickly away being that 99% stuff. Then the nampha goes right behind it.

Plus, when the alcohol/namptha begins to evaporate off, the balance of the other ingredents would be mainly mineral oil

If I was gonna use the stuff, 10 bucks/can is better since you use it all at one and be done with it.

well you dont just make batches of it and set it on the shelf like a store. those chemicals have stabilizers in them to make them last the months they're in storage or on a shelf. if you buy the separate ingredients, make what you need put the bottles on the shelf.

Water works good too. It doesn't have the anti grease/oil properties that Seafoam has but it will remove the carbon too.

I learned that trick from an old guy I used to work with. He worked in a ford dealership back in the 60's and said get the engine warmed up and trickle it in the carb while you keep it revved up around 3k to steam clean. He didn't recommend doing it with these "new" cars.

Possibly because of sensors or because he didn't know too much about modern vehicles and played it safe?

It's the same thing that happens with people using methanol/water injection, the water and methanol steam clean and pull up crusted carbon/oils.

It's like de-glazing a hot pan, it's heated up and you introduce a cold (in comparison to the surface temp) liquid, the burnt stuff will lift right off from the temperature change and flash boiling.

I'm sure thats why. I'm sure anything you put in such as water or sea foam kind of jacks with the computer but I don't think there is a danger of killing any sensors. I think the key thing would be to not let it die and be dumping liquid X in.

Bet you can take a hunk of vacuum line with a valve on it to throttle down the water flow, hook it up to a vacuum intake, attach it to a bottle of sorts, fill the bottle with water and do the "steam cleaning" on high idle - but light on the water draw, for too much flow and you might get "hydro lock".

Then, change the oil right afterwards ...

Just a bottle of 99 percent iso alcohol is 5 bucks. Plus in many places you. Cannot but iso concentrated more than 90 percent. You can't look at the cost to make a pt vs buying a pint because some of those ingredients have to be purchased in containers larger than a pint. Post a pic of receipt showing all the ingredients needed for this showing it was only 1.83 to make and ill put in my sig that you were right.

Hell a gallon of naphtha is like 6 or 7 bucks

I haven't made any. I just found the post on evom and found it interesting and possibly worth doing.

You would have to purchase a large amount such as a gallon of each. If you got a 1 gallon naptha, 1 gallon mineral oil, and 16 oz of 99% alcohol that would be enough to make 9 - 16 oz batches. If you bought bottles of sea foam to equal those batches it would be about $95. It probably depends on what price you can source in your area. So far I found naptha for $14 and mineral oil for $12 in gallons. The alcohol for 16 oz is about $5. For me I would have about $32 in 9 batches and have leftover naptha and mineral oil for cleaning or more batches with added alcohol which would make it cheaper.
