Anyone has the knowledge on this subject? I'm not a racer or anything but I want to keep up with my friends who has nice and fast cars every time we go cruising. This is my first car, and I have no idea how to build it and how much will it cost me to make it a little bit faster. Hoping for your kind and knowledgeable replies! Cheers

If you have an non-turbo auto eclipse .. Don't expect to keep up with your friend unless you go turbo.. Even then a604 is not that good of a transmission for performance.. Even if you drop 3k at ipt you get lucky if you get around 300whp before it go boom. I know this because I once had an 99 rs auto

A/t transmissions are stronger than our manuals. I have two friends local running 9s on autos.

Yes and no.
I have a friend running 600AWHP and 10 second slips on a manual.

I think a big thing for any transmission is proper cooling be it an auto or manual gear box.

If it's something you are going to daily drive, maybe do some Auto X or track days then I'd go manual. If it's an all out drag car then Auto.

My girlfriend had an auto GS.
We did a crank pulley, cold air intake, didn't have time to put the Pacesetter or exhaust on so we just unbolted it at the downpipe, Accel coil and fancy blue spark plug wires on a 20k mile rebuild.
Even with Bullett driving the car it only managed a 17.7
With times like that the only way you're going to get it to go faster is by getting out and pushing.

You could do a 2.4 EDZ motor swap. Fairly easy to do and doesn't cost a million dollars to do. That is what I'm in the process of doing for my RS, that and a 5speed swap. The Auto transmissions in the NTs have really sucky gears, especially 1st. Now you can get a stall speed for it and the final drive out of a cloud car to make it a little better, but you'll be spending a lot of money on it. If you want to keep the nonturbo and still keep up with the turbo DSMs without turboing the car, do the EDZ swap with the 420a head. Gets some decent cams for it, better pistons, a 60mm jeep TB, and with a few other mods the car will be making easily 200+ HP with the added torque of a 2.4L :thumb:

The o.p is not trying to build a drag car LOL. The stock tranny you have can support the power your car puts out. There is not alot more you could do to it. If you where to try to do transmission mods on a slow car the price would not be worth it. Just keep up the maintanace on it all run a bigger trans cooler if you want and basic 420a mods, intake, exhaust, header. You have to remember it's just a 4 banger so don't exspect alot out of it. The only other thing that it would be a little faster if it was a 5 speed.

Realistically about how much does the swap cost?

I concur with this guy^
Stock vs stock yes, and modded vs modded yes.

Auto can hold 400 hp stock. The manaual probably as well, but that might be pushing it.The stock auto has run 10's..Any manuals have run 10's on stock tranny?

You also can't count those two in this conversation. There both freaks of nature..I hope you guys see this post.:tease:

Maintenance=horserpower. If your car is not running right it's not going to preform well. Try keeping it cool on the hot days look into doing a cold air intake and maybe a bigger auto trans cooler. Doing these things will make your car run top notch.

My buddies 700hp Vr-4 galant has run 11.4 stomping on the brakes with his bone stock drivetrain. Stock 4 bolt, tcase, and 23 spline trans. It's a 100% full factory trim, street weight galant. Only reason he hasn't dropped a mid 10 is because he isn't caged or certified faster than 11.49, so its all brakes past the 1000'
