how to install clutch w/o clutch pilot

Does anyone now how to install a clutch without a clutch pilot tool?I try the last two day and can't seem to line up the clutch str8t enough.I try calling the local auto store autozone,advance and oreilly but no one has one for sale it ony come in a clutch kit I could get one from ebay but I dont want to wait a week for it.Also can someone tell me the torque spec on the clutch bolts I have the book but it seem to be missing a few page thank in advance

14 ft/lb PP to FW bolts.

Go to the hdwe store and find something that is roughly the same size as the inside of the clutch disc splined area that also tapers down to the size of the hole in the FW...there has to be something there right??? I am sure someone has a better way.

Too bad you don't have a hook-up at the auto parts store. Sh_t they should let you borrow one out of the clutch kit. If you have a DSM, then you have done enough business there to get that kind of service.

Honestly the best way is with the tool. you can do it without but its a pain. Rockauto.com has them for less than 3 bucks and you can have it overnight-shipped for 30 bucks or 2nd business day shipped for 19 bucks.




Edit: Or just buy their cheap clutch kit and use the tool and bring back the kit and get your money back.

You could always take the input shaft out of the trans. Most napa's will have a install tool.

You dont want to risk not having it lined up properly. I realized I needed one and called Advance Auto and they had one in stock for like 3$. If they dont have one I'm sure they can get you one. Ask..

1/2" drive extension will locate it roughly enough that when you tighten the PP down, itll be a LOT easier.

I try a 14 deep socket with a extension it about the right size but it still didn't line up right.I went to autozone web site and it said you can order one but when I went to the store to place a order they said they dont have none only come in a kit.I was thinking of doing what tjbiker mention buy a kit use the tool and return the item back.Thank for the advice everybody.By the way anyone have the torque spec for the clutch I search but didnt come up with nothing.

Advance auto parts has them. they are like $7.

I just saw them at Harbor Freight. It's a tool with a bunch of different fittings. Ran about $9.

This is the exact tool I've always used. It's a universal clutch alignment tool and got it about 3 or 4 years ago from Auto Zone for like $18.

It consists of the rod, interchangeable tips for the pilot bearing, and a tapered cone to be pushed into the clutch disc to keep it held at the perfect alignment. Easy to use, cheap and a great tool to have around the shop.
