I have a set of HKS 272/272 cams and am looking to install them in my 1G but I'm not sure how much power I'll gain from them if any so I'm wondering how many people are running them with the 14b?

Mods:

14b with 16g 7cm housing
FP intake and 2G MAS
RC550's
walbro 190
fmic
ARP headstuds
balance shafts eliminated
rebuilt head with cometic HG and Gates timing belt
ported evo III manifold
ported 2g o2 housing
3" tbe
ACT2600
Eprom ECU soon to have DSMLink

You are going to lose a little spool and would benefit more from 264's with this setup but none the less i will be doing it soon and can't imagine you would lose power from it.

Not too worried about losing spool since I virtually have no turbo lag Lol

Just looking for a little more power in the mid and up top.

yea i figured that i mean it is a 14b after all LOL.

i don't think you will be disappointed after putting in the 272s

Combining the "hybrid" 14B with the larger exhaust housing will definitely aid your 272 combo. I would next look into getting larger injectors. 550s are just too small. I got Evo 560s (which are really 590-610s) and their definitely too small. And I got a regular 14B!

Would 272's be overkill for a 14b though since it runs out of steam before the 272's can really be beneficial? Either or you'll see good gains but maybe not tapping into the full power of the 272's. Not trying to deter you from them as I have a small 16g and I'm actually thinking of purchasing 272's but people have told me it would be total overkill as the S16G runs out of steam around the same range as the 14b... So I'm just asking out of curiousty as I'm still sitting on the fence about my purchase.

Well, when I had my Evo and installed HKS 272's on the 10.5 turbo I noticed power throughout the whole RPM range, not just in high end. I just can't see them making the car lose any power or being pointless. I knew someone running 280's with a 16g, sounds pointless but still made more power over the stock cams.

I ran the 272's with a 14b. I lost some topend but down low it had a little more power

Yes it's a little wierd. On 20lbs of boost i can run mid 12's but the trap is always between 100-102. Also my car is a auto

^^^ Sounds like those cams needed to be degreed.

Jdog_27, the small 16g does NOT run out of steam in the same range as the 14b. It flow 4lb/min more or about 50whp more. MUCH bigger compressor.

Look at it like this. The 14b compressor flow 34lb/min. You've done one thing to see that potential, convert to a 16g hotside. All 16g turbos benefit from cams with similar range in specs to the hks272s. My small 16g LOVES my fp2X cams. I saw 36lb/min at only 22psi and 80*F intake temps and it didn't fall off up top like one would think even with the stock intake manifold.

I am running delta h272 (like the hks272s) in my green awd. Even with the 6cm^2 housing, it is flowing VERY well. I don't have anly logs on this computer. But I'm seeing 30lb/min at 18psi-20psi with a more restrictive exhaust than my 16g setup in the above mentioned car. Humble flow numbers. But I havn't swapped to the ebay 16g turbine housing and pushed past 20 psi. It falls a bit uptop. But I remember gaining alot of topend flow swapping to a 7cm^2 turbine housing along time ago back when I had my other 14b on my fwd.

And a turbine housing is NOT RPM SPECIFIC. The 14b does no die uptop with stock cams. The stock cams do. The 14b dies when the demand for more than 34lb/min is reached. If that never happens, then your 272s will act like 272s in other cars, strong mid-range and plenty of topend. If because of your boost number and other flow aspects of your setup, you see 34lb/min at 5500rpms, then yea you're going to die off uptop.

With a good tune and open exhaust, I bet you can see the flow limits of a 14b on pump gas with the 7cm^2 housing, IF you get a nice set of 272s. Again, my 16g setup (same turbine wheel housing as yours) saw over the flow of the 14b compressor at 22psi with 272 style cams and stock manifolds with big exhaust. I was running pump gas.

Just this past weekend at the shootout, my brother was running his 14b w/ 7cm housing, FWD with bc272's. We had 350miles on the motor, with boost set at 13lbs. Still on the stock sidemount. He couldnt get his 60' below a 2.4, but managed a 14.0 @103. I was impressed with his trap speeds. The car really pulls well for all that it is.

Nice! Thanks for the clarification...really useful info dsm-onster. Made my decision to go ahead and purchase the 272's a lot easier. Also sounds like this would work great for the 14b as well and not overkill like I originally thought. Love being informed:thumb:

I can't wait to drop them in, just finding the time is the hard part. And I need to get my car smogged first..

You positive? My friend passed with bc 272's in his Evo, I just think it will be weird pulling up to the smog station with a gnarly lope hahahaha

I know from personal experience.. Lets just say that. I passed with a lot more mods than what you are planning I'm sure LOL.

By hybrid are you referring to simply exchanging the hotside of the turbo? If so, where would one source one from?
