How many miles is to much for a gst or gsx?

Sorry i am new to this, i wasn't trying to upset anyone. I just don't know a ton about dsm's and i knew you guys do so i was just curious if anyone had a good answer to this.

Thanks for the response gsxeclipse97, I have $3,700 and i am looking to buy a 96-99 GST or GSX. Just waiting for the right car to come up sucks. I've been having tempts to buy a 94-96 SL 3000gt instead, because waiting for a sweet eclipse to come up sucks! Is a 96-99 Eclipse Gst or Gsx worth waiting for?!

Yeah im sure they'll have a problem somehow. But It's ok. I'll just learn how to fix that problem. Which will benefit me. I'm just going to make sure it doesn't have crank walk. Or any other major problems.

Awesome statement! Great attitude! With the info on this forum there really is extremely little that cannot be fixed on our cars. I would wait as long as it took for the right gst/gsx vs the sl 300gt!

We'll Looks like i will be waiting for a very good condition gst/gsx to come up. I'll be saving more money by the week also. I am gonna hopefully wait for a grandma/grandpa, or a girl that's owned it. I'm gonna get it completely stock im hoping for. I heard the GSX are more prone to crankwalk then the gst cause AWD is harder on the engine. So I'm leaning some what more towards a GST. I also heard that '95 2G eclipse are the most common to get crankwalk??? That's why i am gonna only go for a 96-99! Thanks for all the help!:thumb:

Don't worry much about the crankwalk stuff. Real simple If you get a 95-96 just disconnect the clutch safety switch so you never start the car with the clutch pushed in, load on the thrust bearing, and no oil pressure yet. There are other prevention ideas, theories, and fixes that you can do but Most of these cars have well over 100k on the clock so if it was gonna happen it already has. Just pick 1g or 2g and roll with it.

I had one walk on me but it was the original stock motor with 130k, always started with the clutch depressed, had set for several years then started with old nasty oil in it(wasn't me), was a 95, had to be push started a couple times (yep me workin out bugs), and had a coil go out while driving so the engine would barely run resulting in low oil pressure that could starve the thrust bearing.

The other thing to think about is the newest dsm's are almost 15 years old so everything needs some attention. With those kind of years you can pretty much bet all kinds of stuff has dry rotted, worn out, rusted, and generally just needs replaced. That's the fun stuff though because you get to upgrade them. LOL Poly bushings, nice shocks, drop her down away from 4x4 status, brakes, ball joints, sway links, control arms, and an empty wallet. :thumb: Keeps you out of trouble that way..... or maybe make you do "things" for cash. OMG

I tagged this 1990 Laser with 161K miles on it back in 2008. Only major things that I did to it to it is a full belt replacement and an ECU. Now, pushing 191K miles still runs like a dream.

Dang, I'd jump at the 3000GT with the twin turbo 6G72 V6 setup if that ever popped around in a heartbeat ... And it's built in Japan.

Also, if someone had a Dodge Stealth up for let, it's the same car, but called a 'captive import' - an import vehicle with an American Trademark attached to it.

Dodge, being left out of the DSM world, snuck in by taking a Mitsu 3000GT and calling it a Dodge Stealth.

Only thing one really has to remember is that: no matter what used vehicle you purchase where the vehicle is 10 years plus old and what condition - being excellent or a fun project vehicle - you'll never get back what you put into it if you do a sale.

About the only time you bank on it is when it hits the antique and exotic level where it is definitely a collector's item since it will be a rare one to see on the streets.

He said SL model, correct me here if needed but the twin turbo is vr4 not SL correct? Also OP's looking for a daily driver and a heavy AWD 3000gt is pricey on fuel just my opinion.

I gotta agree witht he others. Wait for a gsx/tsi awd. Dont get me wrong, fwd is fun and smoking camaros is a blast from a roll-on but launching is not going to happen. Atleast not without a lot of work to suspension and a ton of skill i guess? If you have to get a gst, which may be the case, get a LSD put it and go with some very soft compound front tires. When you start upping the power it'll help.

Get ready for a lot of work. Mileage doesnt really matter cause youre going to have the engine and tranny out in no time and be tinkering with things.

One thing to stay away from: HACKED WIRING!!! Very very common in dsms. I would take a car with a blown motor anyday over a car with a great motor and completely hacked wiring(under dash, in bay etc)
Good luck to you and your bank account

Check compression, crank end play, turbo shaft play, ball joints, tie rods, leaks, rust... low miles don't always mean it's a good buy. I bought my 99 GSX with 178K on it a couple years ago with all the maintenance records. It now has almost 258K and idrive it 120 miles a day. It's all in how you take care of the car.

To me, mileage isnt that important. I have seen cars with over 200k miles that were well maintained and mechanically and aesthetically mint, and seen cars with under 100k miles that are completely junk mechanically, aesthetically and everything esle.

Now if there were two PERFECT cars sitting next to each other. Both in perfect tip top shape, I would prefer the one with less miles, but condition is more important.
Absolutely perfect, well maintained car with 250k miles > non maintained neglected car with 75k miles in my opinion.
