How Many Miles On A Block?

How many miles does the 4g63 block usually last? I know you can keep rebuilding them if the miles get too high, but I'm talking about total miles. Even though your newly rebuilt motor may only have 30k miles on it, the TOTAL miles, unless bought brand new, is probably a great deal more. So how many TOTAL miles can these blocks take before they become weak?

Thats all very circumstantial. It depends on how hard the motor is ran, if it gets overheated, if it runs low on oil or out of it. A BIG killer is knock/detonation.

In a perfect world you could pull a million miles on an engine that was perfectly maintained and driven normally.

In a not so perfect world you could knock badly and you could spin a bearing or drive too hard and toss a rod, or if you have a 7 bolt, well...

Some of it is just luck of the draw unfortunately.

Unless you actually crack it, or run out of overbore, an iron block gets better the older it is. The v8 guys know all about a seasoned block.

It could last for ever you could always get it sleeved if you have to bore it to much. From there you just change out the sleeves. But they are verry expencive.

But you throw a rod and the block is toast.

+1. The v8 guys love the older motors with some miles on them. When the ford guys look to build race motors out of a 351 or 302, they like the block to have 150-200k on them! Also the gm guys like the LQ9's out of the full size Suburbans. They are 6.0l beasts that almost always have alot of miles on them and are merely industructable! As long as they are properly maintained they only get better with age!

These are basically the answers you need.

The block is just a block of metal and will be fine unless you do some major damage to the block itself. You can get sleeves if you run out of standard overbore sized pistons or you can contact the piston manufacturer and make larger bore pistons for you.
