Just bout a 92 awd laser off of a friend w/ the 6bolt 4 bolt combo for relitively cheap. hes owned the car for i think nearly 5 years and has had no issues with it for his past 2 years of driving it, was well maintained and fixed.
This car has seen its fair share of drag racing ( best of 11.9 115mph on e316g and race gas) and a lot of autocross and stuttar box launches.. ( Built trans )
and since its already fairly built i am only going to carry over a few mods from my gst and only do exterior and interior touch ups to the car and hope to just drive it for the next yr without a headache like my gst caused me.

Well anyways we did a compression test on it ( this one has somewhere around 86k on the block and maybe less than half of that on the head)
And it scored

Starting from the timing belt cover going towards the left-
147, 150, 160, 160 ( Stock 1g compression ratio. )

I think you dont want more than a 14 psi difference...?
The 160s on that test I believe were due to carbon build up since it was on the richest cylinders, and possibly why the one with 147 and 150 were on the leanest cylinders...

But it did take about 6 to 7 cranks for it to get its full compression therefore shows sign of wear. This car does have blow by and according to him burns about 1 quart of oil every 4- 500 miles ( with a good amount of boosting/racing during these miles... ). Which for my driving Id think that would equal to about 1 quart a month...
Does that seem normal? I know older dsms can consume quite a bit of oil especially under boost...

His car does throw a light film of blue smoke ( oil ) out under boost... ( Turbo is fairly new)
You wont see it in the day time, only at night in the head lights, and doesnt smoke one bit on idle, partial throttle or cruising, or when revving it up from a stop. Only under full throttle w/ boost will it emit light smoke ( once again not visible at day time. )

We pretty much say its blow by from age ( Both his pcv lines hang down towards the street )

As Ive discussed with my friend im hoping I can get at least a year out of this engine without any troubles and without the oil consumption worsening any just to have a fast car to drive back and forth from work and school basically.
I am very good with keeping up with oil though because my gst had/has very very bad valve stem seal problems and I had to put a quart of oil in every two weeks w/ regular driving, and it would be even worse if I drove hard.

Anyways Just trying to get some feedback thanks!

124k miles and boosting 15.5 psi daily on pretty much stock everything except exhaust and intake.

I agree with the buy from old person statement. The original owner of my car (i'm 2nd owner) was an older guy. Car was bone stock and ran great.

90 awd tsi,

bought 4 months ago. with 205,000

has 206,000

Completely stock car and has always been. Don't know if anything like the engine was replaced. I don't think so, but i'm sure a valve job and misc parts i.e. clutch was replaced sometime within that.

I got my 90 gsx for 750 freakin dollars!!! from a lady that all she knew about the car was that it was turboed. I guess you can say i suckered her into a sweet deal(for me!!!) LOL!!

I got mine rebuilt just pass 168,000. The valve seals were getting bad, oil consumption was about 2 quarts between oil change (3,000 miles). Other than that it was running fine. I desided to get it rebuilt since I accumulated all the parts that I needed for rebuild. It has about 16K since the rebuilt, still driving it at (low)16 psi with no problem.

One more thing if you have the compression numbers for your motors post them up as well... State the type of pistons it has i.e. stock 1g or 2g, wisco 8:8.1 etc, with the compression test result and also your oil consumption... Even put the tranny milage like some of you have which Im sure some of you with knotchy trannys would be interested in seeing. This way we can all use it as a marker to measure our engines conditions from each others.

Thanks once again...

My 91 talon tsi awd had 100,000mi on it before the rebuild. The stock turbo was shot and my compression was about 115 across the board. I ran a 14 second 1/8 mile on that engine.

140k. Bought it with only a hacked air can and MAS two years ago at 126,4XX. 165-170 compression across the board. Original 7 bolt motor. Somewhat notchy trans with a slight grind in 2nd gear if I shift too fast. No oil leaks. Hoping to have it last another few years before a rebuild is needed, since I'll be out of college then and be able to actually afford it.

122k miles on stock 7 bolt. I had a few electrical problems such as the wires behind the front quarter panel melting together. Resulted in a new ecu, 2 new batteries, 3 alternators, and a pair of high beam bulbs before the problem was found. Since the fix, the electrical systems have been virtually trouble free. For a while after i got the car it would drain the battery completely after only a few days and i also noticed that the ac fan would stay on when the car is off if i didnt manually turn it off. But as time has gone on the problem has seemed to be fixing itself. At around 115k i noticed that i could sometimes leave it on and it would turn off with the car. Also, the battery didnt seem to drain nearly as fast. Now at 122k, i can leave the ac fan on all the time and it will shut off with the car, and it seems that i can leave the car sitting for weeks without any noticeable battery drain. Lol, it seems my car has regenerative capabilities. No mechanical problems so far. Im keeping my fingers crossed. Oh, and my check engine light has been on since 3 days after i owned it.

92 TSI FWD 0 miles. (still looking for a new 6 bolt motor) (just bought it last week) MINE

93 TSI FWD 97k miles on chasis and less then 10k on the rebuilt head and 6 bolt block.(bought it 4 years ago) MINE

89 galant gs 205k mileson motor. 100k on 4g63 n/t swap. runs strong.(sold)

This is a real DSM family

91 talon tsi fwd 169K two heads (kissed the pistons both times) still the stock clutch and new brakes first less than 2K ago.:thumb:

164k on completely stock motor and trans. Only thing out of the norm was a new head gasket @ 125k. 15 psi DD, and my car has never burned oil, only leaked it in large quantities! (front seals)

Appears that the 4g63 holds up very well even with age from the looks of a lot of your milage. And they say dsm is never reliable... A turbo car going 150k + like some of you guys... To sum it up it all comes down to maintence and up keep up to the car. Thanks for all the replies and making the thread so useful...

199,000 miles. 150 psi across the board.

The first owner took it to the track every weekend in the summes he owned it. w/ the 14B, safc, and a K&N. Daily driven at 15 psi.

Second owner overboosted the 14b long enough and high enough to blow it. Daily driven.

Now, for several thousands miles, I run 30psi (RS60T) w/ FP2X cams, 3 inch exhaust, so it flows a healthy amount of air through it; daily driven (when it doesn't break clutches). Have run a small 16g (20 psi) and an 18g(30 psi) w/ it daily as well for about 15,000 miles.

It's not the engine that is unreliable. It is the owner. 4G63 long blocks make power if you wink at them. I've noticed that most young or inexperienced DSMers just don't know that they need upgraded clutches, better fuel control for 710cc injectors, bigger intercoolers, bigger fuel pumps; all because the engine responds so well to boost and external flow mods. It's MUCH easier to double the hp output from the factory than a 90s 5.0 mustang (which has about the same output OEM).

over 210,000 stock motor. The tranny we opened up for a SBR insert last summer and still looked good

so with good maintenance these cars will run along time.

Mine does burn a little oil from blow by does not pop the dip stick but it leaks more then anything else

It anti-rust coats it self every day.

1 qt ever 700 miles of hard driven.

A lot of miles for a turbo car, thats pretty impressive...
Do you expect a overhaul soon LOL.? Or feel like this thing is going to perform
for you for quite awhile still.

Well this winter i am going to do something to my turbo honda CRX to make it hook up a little better. and then next winter will be the DSM rebuild we will see about a built 2.0 vs a 2.3 but i hope it last i check the oil all the time because it leaks and when i mod the car it is always on the safe side.

Same thing with the honda when i first started to boost the B16 people were like you are not going to make that motor last with 10.5:1 comp and boost it is going to blow up and now people get alot of power out of the motors and they last too.

So it really comes down to maintenance and have a good base to start with.

Now i have 2 4g63's one in the EVO Mr with a 10y 100k war. on a turbo motor.

My 90 Laser RS Turbo has 178000 on the odometer. Picked it up last month at the police auction for $275. No blow by no smoke boosts' well. Thinkin maybe the motor was rebuilt sometime.

238,721.6 miles. Valve cover off for first time to install Comp 200s. Transmission is stock, second clutch set. Like a Timex.

132,xxx stock long block, cept for cams and 3g lifters....really clean...will be boostin mid 20's on e316g, pulls like crazy on 15 psi.

No blow-by, no leaks, nada maintanance is the key....
