I want to know how hard it is to change the lifters. I’ve read about the DOHC engines. Does anyone know if the steps for the 2.0L apply for the 1.8 sohc as well?

I feel like it may be the same process / similar, but I'm afraid of finding out the hard way and having to fight the dual timing belts. ProDemand makes the process look harder than it probably is I'm sure, but since I'm gonna be pulling it to reseal it, I also want to take care of the tick too. The plan is to reseal it, replace the lifters and possibly do the oil port mod I've seen on here if I can find someone willing to plane the head

If you've got the head off just remove the cam. Are you removing the head just because? Or is something broken?

It appears to be leaking oil externally, head isn't removed yet, it's still driving around, just planning currently
Leaking oil isn't typically a head gasket. Thats a lot of work and expense. Bring us up to speed on what the car is doing.

After a cleaning it's a mild oil leak from front, top and rear. Top looks like the semi circular plug for the valve cover/head gasket, as it's also wet around that. Front end looks like it's possibly the oil pump gasket, but I figured it would be a spray if that was the cause (like a double gasketed oil filter does) and rear is just soaked, undecided if it's rear main or gearbox seal, won't know until I pull it out I suppose. It leaves tiny puddles when parked and has a mild oil burn smell after driving. Rockers are ticking until warmed up, which is why I was debating on removing the head to do the oil port burr mod. My mechanical capabilities are interesting LOL, I've done timing on a beetle, clutch on an f150, injectors on same f150 and a Hilux, head gasket on a lawn mower, and overall general service / c tech \ early b tech work. Debating a compression test to it before I put any hard parts at it

Edit: I forgot to mention, she idles a little funky, but doesn't lope, and if I turn anything electrical intensive on, especially the AC at idle, she vibrates badly and rpm drop about 200-300 rpm. Other than that, she feels little gutless, and max speed has been 70mph so far

Edit2: oh and 4th is non existent. You put it in 4th, let off the clutch and it just grinds

Did you clean or replaced your lifters on your sohc engine? Its not the same, you dont need any special tool. just remove the bolts and clean them, make sure you put back everything in the same position as it was.
