How Can I Tell If I Have An LSD? [Merged 7-8]

yeah, lighting both of them up doesnt always mean lsd. wheels spinning in same direction is lsd, opposite is open diff.

I had this issue with the front ones on my NT. Well i'm just going to buy a used knuckle, bearing and axle, but dont know what will work from what. My car is a 97 eclipse GSX, no ABS. The thing I cant figure out is if it has lsd or not. The only thing I can see on a sticker on the differential is the letters JFB. What cars can I take those parts off of and bolt onto this one??? Thanks in advance

Get all four wheels in the air and spin one of the rear tires. If the other rear wheel spins the same direction as the one you're spinning, then you have LSD. If it goes the opposite way, you have a normal open diff.

Any 2g I think that doesnt have abs has LSD, my 96 gsx had LSD no abs

Open up the drivers side door and look there at all those stickers. There will be a sticker saying LSD if your car is equiped with it. I believe the sticker is orange atleast on the 1G's it is.

No orange sticker! So I guess that is the deciding factor on which axle I can use? Does it matter if its auto or manual, and does it make a difference on the knuckle and wheel bearing?

i have lsd good i find out today i tok it to the auto shop and pay my money $60 so theycan lift the car and confirm that has LSD im proud of this litle expense

The shaft only or the axle? We know that it's all different on a 1G and I'm sure at least the inner BJ on a 2G is different since it needs to have two sets of splines.

That's nice. Until 92 you couldn't get the rear LSD and ABS on the car at the same time.
That's the same sticker I have on my 91 GSX and my 92 RT/TT, it was just easier to take a picture of the one on the parts car. I'm pretty sure it's the same sticker on all the cars fitted with the rear LSD regardless of year.

The axles (half shafts) are different between the non-LSD diff and the LSD equiped one. you need the axles to go with the diff.

There are threads on doing a 2G swap and you'd be better off looking and asking questions in them since this one is just about how to tell if you have LSD. Here's a few.

jacking the car up and spinning a wheel and looking at the other ones doesn't tell you anything. the driveshaft needs to stay stationary (front wheels on ground, car in gear). someone with an lsd can try this and confirm this for me. there are still spider gears in the rear diff. spinning the wheel by hand isn't enough speed or torque to activate an lsd unless it is maybe helical (them i don't understand fully).

I was wondering the same thing on my manual awd tranny. I know how to tell on the rear but what about the tranny.

If its LSD it will say on the tag on the back of the rear diff

As for a front LSD, you'd have to tear into the transmission. Or just know the symptoms of how one acts while driving it (acts odd during tight turns in a parking lot).

Well I looked underneath the car.. and I couldnt find the sticker.. I guess ill have to spin the wheels.. the orange sticker looks like it was removed on the drivers side.. it has little white "void" sticky part of the sticker left.. so Im not sure if they took it off or.. idk.. guess spinning the wheels is the only option

yeah the easiest way to tell would be to just jack it up and see if both wheels turn the same direction. Itll take maybe 2 minutes
