Hole in the block :-( weld cast iron.

is is incorrect. the blocks are cast steel. maybe turbo blocks were better? mitsubishi can advertise however they want. they advertised the evo 8 as having hollow intake valves. and are they hollow? not even close.

bottom line for me. call them cast iron if you will. but they weld with a mig welder without cracking. no pre heating or slowed cool time either. cast is known as one of the most difficult materials to weld. these blocks are not .

so stop being a 12 year old and take it or leave it.

Next time you have a motor around. Spark test it. It'll tell you it's in fact cast iron. You just got lucky.

As for the evo valves it's the exhaust valves and they are sodium filled and not hollow.

Well Page 32 of the latest (todays) Popular Hot Rodding has a good write up on welding cast iron blocks featuring Industrial District Manager and expert welder Josh Sprinkle from Miller Electric. Good article, worth taking the time to read. FYI.

no. they advertised "hollow intakes and sodium filled exhaust".

I got lucky? I dont think so. I have welded a dozen blocks. all same results. did anyonre consider there is an infinite degree of compositions of steel and iron?

The alloy difference is just in the percentage of carbon mixed to the iron, less than 2% is steel, anything higher and it's pig iron, which is what is mostly used for cast iron. If a better, lower carbon content alloy was used to cast the block than its metallurgical property would be greatly affected, which I guess would explain why most cast iron can't be welded while some have good results doing it.
