So, the other day after blocking off my EGR valve, i noticed my BOV was leaking. I have a genuine HKS bov with no adjustments on it, but its 2 years old or so. I could hear a leaking sound while the car was idling at 1000 RPMS, it was leaking from the BOV where it vents, not where it attaches to the pipe. I covered the front of the bov with my hand and the RPM's dropped a lot, the car was almost stalling most likely around 400-450 RPMS. I'm guessing because before i had the BISS screw adjusted up higher to compensate for the vacuum leak the BOV was creating, and when i covered the BOV i wasnt getting unmetered air causing a higher idle. Also the BOV blows off very very very easy, it was going off on me last night without letting off the throttle fully, and would start to whistle real loud for a long period of time under slight boost, and is making my car run very rich and rough under no boost.

Question is, is my BOV shot? Can i shim it with washers? I've never taken apart an hks style bov before. If it's toast then i only have a cheap budget to buy a new BOV, which one should i get?? i can get either hks style, or greddy style flanged bov's, because i have a greddy flange on my IC pipe, and a HKS adapter flange that bolts to the greddy flange.

Ours tent to bypass some air anyway so its pretty natural for it to happen as we recirc but if you vent then its a problem! As you put your hand over it then im guessing your venting your bov?

When I changed to an ngr type s I had to re dial it in and I found I had the same issue with slight leaking of air and if I made it too tight on the spring and keep it closed the car would almost stall so I had to have it where it was by passing air but as its already been accounted for so your safe in keeping it like that! If you wanted to check inside to make sure and clear your mind of any doubt then that will be best that way you know the condition of the inside.

Ive just looked at your mods list and I dont see any dsmlink or anything so you 100% need to have it recirculated

This will also help you take you bov apart. http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=http:...rlbvxQ&usg=AFQjCNFEenqVlGpwDmarCuuANO1SWtS1eA

A BOV should not leak at idle, that means the wrong amount of metered air is getting into the cylinder. I was wondering if the BOV can be simply repaired.

Yes they do leak at idle!

Even the stock oem bov leaks at idle its the way they are designed might be a bad design but even nissan use our bovs.

as its been metered its still accounted for and is perfectly safe! thats why we have to keep our recirc hose attached also if it is metered air then its not the wrong amount going into the system! Now I dont know the ins and outs of how it calculates the bypassed air etc but its not an issue as ive had a greddy that leaked into the recirc hose for years and it has done me no harm at all and if I can find it there is also a few other threads that also state the same that the bov leaks at idle and is still ok if your recirculating it still.

And yes the bov can be repaired most can these days the link I first sent you will show you how to take yours apart

Thanks for the input, i have a knockoff greddy type s bov lying around im going to throw on with the recirculated hose. Ill try to rebuild my HKS in the mean time

no problem buddy, if you keep the type s on then buy the ngr performance diaphragm and it will work almost as good as a real unit!

was you running your HKS to atmosphere then?

this might be of interest to you and also says you dont have to worry about the idle leaking as it recirc etc BOV

So it turns out my HKS bov was completely shot, and i mean COMPLETELY. Driving to my garage today i had to struggle to keep the car running, the BOV was blowing off under throttle and causing a MASSIVE vacuum leak at idle causing the car to run very rough. So when i go to my garage, i swapped over to my type s bov, and it ran amazingly. No more problems running or idling and had good solid vacuum at idle. Just proof that HKS can fail pretty bad, i'll be sure to stick with my type s style bov's and tial.
