There is a hissing noise coming from my passenger rear wheel area. It is there when ever Im moving. Enigine on, off. Brakes on, off. It gets louder and higher pitch the faster I go.

Anybody know?

First, mine is not AWD, but also makes a noise from same side of car. It is not really a “hissing” noise, but more of a whine/hiss/growl, not real loud, but enough you notice it. Sounds like the same noise from tires that are rotated properly. If I turn car left or right, “zig it” some, noise goes away….. Car has really low roll rolling resistance; a strong wind on a flat surface would probably move it. It coasts real easy.

I have always suspected the wheel bearing is slowly going. But, when I jack up the car, and inspect that wheel for any play, it has none. (I need to ck it again, it been about 10K ago that I last ck'd) It rotates fine; car has no “drag” effect. I also feel no excessive heat from that side. I installed new tires, and noise was still there, but seems to be decreasing slightly. The driver’s side rear wheel does have some bearing play, but makes no noise?? I had car aligned, and no problems, all components are good, front and rear.

Note: I had a similar sound on my 5th Ave, and was about the replace the front axels, when I had a mechanic tell me it was all from tires, they were scarfed?? I believe he said. Basically if you run your hand clockwise, then counter clockwise around the tire, it will be “rough” one way, “smooth” the other. He said it was from lack of rotating the tires every 6K miles or so. I had never heard of this before, but, buying tires is easier than changing axels, and the car needed tires!! So, I bought new tires, and noise went away.

I know this is not much help, but I am curious too! Right now I am running BFG Traction T/A’s, which I really like!! I notice this morning, it seemed quieter, maybe they just getting worn in…..LOL.

Maybe you have a snake stuck in your tire....... J/J :p I have noticed that every brand of tire that I have used on my Eclipses, made a diff. sound on the pavement. I've used Kuhmo, BFg's, Yokahama, and Toyo and they all make a different sounding road noise. As long as the sound isnt something slowly wearing or breaking, I would just live with it.

is there a bearing or something that could be bad? Its only the one wheel and its not road noise from the tire

thanks guys ill get new ones. I guess i will do them all just in case they are getting old. Are there bearing on all of the wheels or only the back. I just put new CVs and didnt see any bearings in the front wheels.

No dont waste your money. Dont fix what isnt broken. Beside there quite expensive. Dont know exactly what they are for a talon but i had to buy one for my s-10 and it was $341. Dont quote me but for a TEL i think there $140-$150.

Bearings are on all the wheels and they are part of the wheel hub assembly :talon:
