Hey is this sound normal? Sounds like a slight knocking sound when running. I used to only get it when the car was cold or had just been started but now the sound is getting to be all the time and a little louder. I never thought much of it before because I know a couple other DSMer's and they all had the same problem. I heard that the sound is normal for these engines, now Im not so sure.

Is this normal?
Note: Also its winter here so the weathers alot colder, maybe thats why It sounds so bad.

Thanks,
Xan (TFL) :talon:

what oil are u using?
when was the last time u changed it?
have u tried any oil additives?

Ever since I switched to 3g lifters I have never heard it tick even if it is really cold out. It cured my fantom knock problem ;)

I usually use Castrol Syntek but right now I got some QS 5w-50 Full Synthetic. I work at Jiffylube so theres no problems with oil (I changed it last night).

Explain to me more about 3g Lifters. Hows it done how $?

Thanks,

I'm in the same boat mine just started to tick. I'll start the car cold than after about 45 sec. of running it starts to tick pretty loud too. Then after it warms up it's gone. Its still annoying though and i want to get rid of it. Today i started the car, it started to tick then i was outside of the car and it was really loud. Then it just stopped i don't understand.
I'm going to get the 3g lifters too but a little more info would be nice. I'm on a new bottom end using 10w30 mobil non-synthetic.

Can anyone explain what is actually making the ticking noise in detail please.

talon_for_life if you get any good info let me know.

I had the same problem when it was warm no or not as much tick. cold or low oil lots of tick. tried full synthetic, conventional, and a mixture of both nothing. my mechinic told me about Lucas. its an oil additive, put in one quart Lucas full synthetic(comes in both full on non-synthetic) and four quarts royal purple 10w30. about 100 miles later no tick!
my turbo bit the big one and dumped about one quart into the licp and who know how much it burned, pulled the dipstick to check the oil and it was bone dry. still no lifter tick. my cousin put the same stuff into his car and no tick either even in 0 degree weather! you can use upto a 60/40 mix of this stuff.

I would still like an explination of the ticking sound and why its so bad with DSM's. Also, how much should it cost to upgrade lifters and is it really nessesary..?

By the way, I have a problem with my oil pressure gauge. When I start the car cold it will show full pressure, then after awhile pressure will go down to 0! This is and has been regular for as long as I've had the car. When I run the RPM's up a little higher the pressure gauge will go back up to normal. Seems like when it sits on idle it reads 0 for pressure. Is this just a factory fault or is something really wrong?

Thanks,

I have had to train myself to ignore a majority of the noises on these motors. One thing I hate hearing is things that sound like metal hitting together. Lifter tick on these motors is normal but can be solved. Some of the time you have to accept it because its just like a dog chasing his tail.

Ok that makes me a little happier. I dont hear any engine noise over road noise but then again I have HKS exgaust and its pretty loud. My oil pressure guage still scares me though.

3g lifters = how much?

Thanks,

I got the 3g lifters for 130 shipped of ebay. They were Nippon Denso units :thumb:

not to be a dick but do a search...

pull timing belt and related items, pull cams, and there they are. make sure to prime them as well. id suggest getting a shop manual if your not too sure of yourself.

Actually I never removed my timing belt or pulled the cams to replace the lifters. I was really easy.

If you take your time you do NOT have to pull the tbelt or camms.
just do one at a time.

I remember reading a post on dsmtalk. Someone disassembled a bunch of lifters. None were cloged. Some ticked while others didn't. The conclusion was oil supply problem casused the majority of lifter tick.

The pressure is normal like that. You reading a stock oil pressure gauge?
