High idle after new starter?

Alright guys this problem has never happened to me before nor have I heard of anyone else with the same issue. I had a starter go out on me, I got it to start at a nearby casino where it broke down. I brought it home and let it idle. It stalled right before i got in it to bring it in the garage, when i tried starting it, the starter was making loud noises and such but i finally got it to start. I noticed the idle spiked right after startup to about 2800 rpms and stayed there for a bit then idled down just a bit and wouldnt come down. New starter same idle problem, help!
 
Starter has nothing to do with idle. at all. U might have bumped some vacuum line or some other lines in the process of starter swap IMO
 
Check over all vacuum lines that were removed when you changed the starter. This would be the perfect opportunity to do a boost leak test if you haven't before.
 
Well it happened before I messed with any vaccum lines or wires or anything, that's the part I don't understand. I will try a boost leak test when I get home.
 
If your car still had the braket to support the IM you chould've pulled off one of those hoses while trying to change the starter. I've done it before also. Good luck.

Alright guys, i'm going to have to get some things together tomaroo to make up a boost leak tester. I did find a broken wire that goes to a senor on the throttle body, but my dad took the sensor off and moved the float around thinking it would change the idle, and it didn't really. Should I buy a new one and try that ?
 
There is no float in the throttle body - those are in carburators. ROFL
However there is an idle speed control actuator (ISC) and a throttle position sensor both of which have wires which if broken/disconnected could cause high idle (especially the ISC).
 
I know that ha he said its like a float, the higher the idle the more the piece moves in a different direction. I believe its the tps because I have a brand new isc installed. Would that cause this high of an idle?

The connector doesnt look like a tps either idk what it is, its smaller and has a wire going into it. Its smaller than an isc too.

Alright guys what does the fiav look like?? I can't find a picture anywhere! I need to know if thats the sensor i'm trying to replace. The one that broke off is small and it is threaded with a flat gold colored tip on the end when tooken apart. It has a tab at the end that broke off where the connector went into it.
 
I already told you, idle position switch. FIAV is u8nderneath the throttle body and it is not a sensor. It's an idle control valve and it's mechanically controlled by temperature difference supplied by coolant lines.
Fix your idle position switch.
 
Ooo im sorry I thought the tps was what you were referring to the whole time LOL. I need a new one where.could i get one??
 
Is the idle speed control the same as an idle air control valve?
I had high idle on my ranger. I replaced the idle air control valve and the problem was solved.
 
Are you just looking at random parts?
And from the post above no this is not the idle speed control motor.

I looked at several sits and never found it. It's likely OEM only. JUnkyard or cough it up. If 90$ sounds high to you....well you're in for a surprise if you continue to own one of these.
 
Do not just check continuity of the switch itself. Also check the ground of the circuit. The OP stated his switch broke the electrical connector off the top so unless he figures out how to fix that he'll need a new switch. For the IPS to work properly you must have a ground path from the throttle body. A stock setup includes a small L shaped bracket on the front of the throttle body that seemingly doens't do anything. Well it does, it's a ground strap. There is also a ground wire from the intake manifold (that the L shaped braket just connected to the throttle body) to the firewall. This completes the ground circuit. If any of those are missing the IPS can't do it's job.
 
Went out and put the old sensor back on and tightened it down as I was going to use a multimeter like I'm supposed too. Started it up and the idle is back to normal! I don't understand it
