Ok guys I'm new to the dsm world but I'm more than mechanical inclined but last night I rode out with a fined to look at a 1g tsi awd http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/cto/4768358162.html here is the ad now we get there and check the oil he claims it sat but there is no oil on the stick it was q n a half low no biggy bc his friend starts it up and moves. It around n the valve cove gasket leaks but none of the vacuum lines for the boost gauge or blow off r hooked up permatex every were LOL 2g maf wit no filter the wide band is not hooked up the ecu has dsm link but no cable but that's all no big dea o n it has n exhaust leak what I concerned about is only at an idle will it do it round 750 rpm or so it has a knock not rod knock it in the top end and goes away the moment u budge the throttle even if it's a Lil bit it's gone and it revs freely . Now with that said I made him pull the valve cover I found no hks cams but the cam caps and rockers were tight and it wasn't like a lifter tick sound it was loud but as said the noises stop wen revved or throttle above idle is applied (we topped off oil b4 starting) any thoughts I'm a Honda guy LOL new to the dsm world car sounded healthy other than that good throttle response didn't smoke and revved great hold it on 2step sounds ship shape

Looks like it was put together just to sell it. However, if you're looking for a 1g, that interior does look nice, and the exterior isn't horrible. I'd definitely pull that motor and send to JAM for a rebuild, cut crank is a big no-no. It could also have a shaved head with no oil-port mod, so the head is being starved of oil at idle, hence the sounds that go away when revved.

If your not scarf pull the motor and do an over haul best thing to do in these situations where u know they prob beat it and have fooled with other things is just go through it all.. Plus great learning experience also from the looks and sounds of it sounds like a good price for the parts he has on it also how did u identify that they weren't not hks cams?

hmm... this car has potential. I've fixed/restored a lot worse. My suggestion would be that you make sure you are willing to fully go through this car. As in checking over everything, replace/fix parts, and making sure the routine maintenance has been done. I'm sure the wiring and vacuum lines are a mess. You would be taking a risk with the knocking but theres a good chance it's just the balance shafts. I had that happen to my 91 GSX years ago but I did the balance shaft elimination kit and the problem was fixed. Also I think it has DSMLink V1 and it's probably gonna be difficult to find another cable. You could do the upgrade to ECMLink V3 $195 and get a new USB cable for $45. Thats $240 for ECMLink V3, great deal.

If it were me I'd take it if I could pick it up for $1,500 - $1,800. This car appears to have been rigged up and probably hasn't been maintained well. So I would have to get it at a lower cost so I could dump some $ into repairs. Hope this helps

Lol my friend is buying it and I do the negotiations I got it for 1500 LOL n it's was very clean no rust beautiful body and I made him start it with the valve cover off and the squirter were all squirting except a few then the pressure started to build n oil started to shoot every were but It has a balance shaft delete and the gauge unless it didn't wrk read nothing for press so I'm wondering if it was done incorrectly and it's causing lack of oil to the top end but if that's the case y is the knock so loud it's as loud as rod knock just in the top end[DOUBLEPOST=1417711614][/DOUBLEPOST]

Pretty sure it's v1 as well so idk anything about it he said he had trouble getting the extension cable or something bc it was the older system and it looked like it was slapped together for a quick sell

They weren't stamped hks on the shafts[DOUBLEPOST=1417715144][/DOUBLEPOST]
Pull it it's an easy job give u a chance for all new bearings and a good piece of mind LOL
It's suppose to have just been rebuilt said it's not even broke in yet

$1,500 is a good deal for this car. Hopefully your friend can take the time to fix it up right.

It's possible someone didn't block the oil holes when the Balance shaft delete was done or they ported the Oil filter housing pressure relief too much. That would cause low oil pressure. Hopefully they used the correct stubby shaft with the oil groove. If not, then your oil pump won't last long.
