i just replaced the gasket on my valve covber and my spark plug gaskets. i put the valve cover back on and took my car out for a ride. i dorve down the street and as i went into 3rd gear i heard a loud bang(oil cap blew off and hit the hood) so i pull over and look and theres oil all around where my oil cap is, but my oil cap was on the ground a few feet back. so i go home and look at it and theres oil only on the right side of the valve cover and fuel rail and intake manifold and that small area on the hood. it looks like it all came from a contained area(the oil cap hole) you guys think the gasket just blew on my oil cap. BY THE WAY i had one of those 50 dollar chrome greddy oil caps, maybe thats why. go back to stock?

you guys dont think it could be a more serious problem like head gasket do you? i asked my buddy and he said its simply just the oil cap gasket

Did your cap have tension behind it. Or was it really loose. Engine vibration could have caused the oil cap to rattle itself loose and then just pop off.

I know where he's coming from. Now I don't know if the oil cap on my 1g is messed up or not, but there are just two tabs on the base of the cap, and when it's installed, it doesn't lock against anything like a radiator cap does, or screw down like a bottle cap would. I put it on, and start to turn, and I can tell it engages the part of the valve cover that those tabs go under, and if I turn it anymore than that by just a smidgin', it comes loose again. So if all DSMs are like this, maybe he just turned it a little too far and it vibrated loose or something.

I don't think it's a serious problem unless you have one of those crapp knock off caps where the innards and screw back out and fallinto your head. Make sure the cap is all there, and then put the stocker back on!OMG
