Head issues

I have recently purchased my first 1g. i have had many other 2gs but now im ready. it is a 1990 TSI AWD 5 Speed. i purchased it from a shop i just started to work at. I have grown up on musle but love dsm's now. the car is extremely clean extremely clean. but dosent run i purchased for 500. the shop macanic said he looked at it and i needed a new radiator and a new head what the reason idk. i am just asking if i should pull the motor and take her apart this winter. or slap areplacement head on and see where i sit.

I think the first question to consider:

What are your realistic goals for the car? This will help determine the correct course of action.

I would also find out why the head needs to be replaced. Is it cracked or did the valves bend and he says its cheaper to replace the whole thing. I wouldn't pull the whole engine for just the cyl head unless you have money to spend on building it up or there is a issue in the bottom end.

whats the budget you have to work with?
and what do you want the car for? DD ? drag race? auto X?

I would say a budget of 3000 to get the car running againg and hopfuly a few mods. the machanic at my shop has the head off the car aready and said it was the valves. would i be better off trying to fing another or fixing the old. but of coures i change the timming belt and whatever else u guys think i should check. the drive train is suosed to be solid. what else should i check for. thanks for the help.

Well general maintenance on these cars is crucial... Going over everything replacing all old vacuum hoses etc. But depending on what goals you have for the car (horse power in a street car/drag car). Really makes the difference on the route you should take. For example, My goals are 325-350 WHP on 91 octance and maybe E-85 in the future.

For now rebuild the head. New timing componants and get the car running.Then take it from there.
