Do the work yourself and it won't cost 900, you could buy the tools and parts if you don't have them and it wouldn't cost you 900.

how much do you think it would cost to do by myself and he wanted to switch to studs over bolts

If your just replacing with a stock head gasket and arp studs it would cost less than 200. Here is a how to for the timing belt, you can get the tool for rotating the eccentric idler pulley from a vendor. The Infamous Timing Belt TSB

if i do have a couple more dollars to spend than 200 what would be my best path for this, seeing as i will be adding more mods in the near future. so will i need a head gasket and studs that will handle more horsepower.:applause: thank you to all helping

i have just recently redone my whole timing kit but i will be getting a larger turbo and intake piping this head gasket and studs will be fine even when i go further?

can anyone find a manual for taking apart my car to replace the head gasket and switch from studs to bolts?

No offense, but if you need a Manual to take the head off you shouldn't be doing it yourself. Boosted motors are precision machines and there are a million and one errors someone who is unfamiliar with engine work can make without having a clue (not their fault, just lack of experience). There are professional mechanics that will do the work you are requesting for half that price. Shop around.

hello everyone i now have all the parts off and have my new head gasket and valve cover gasket what possible problems should i be looking for when all this is off and how can i recognize them. please reply

Start here:

Timing Belt VFAQ (Timing Belt TSB - ENHANCED)

You have to take all these parts off anyhow to replace your head gasket. Get a kit that includes OEM timing belt, idler pullers, timing belt tensioner.

You will also want to replace your water pump.

While all this can be done with the engine in the car, you will probably be better off to pull the engine. Space is pretty tight on that side.

I would pull the engine, do a balance shaft delete, replace all the components including valve stem seals, switch over to ARP studs.

Should give you many good years of driving after that.

I totaly disagree with you about if he needs a manual he should not do it himself. We all have to start somewhere when we do our own work and there is nothing more valuable than a set of sevice manuals. Every manufacturer has its own procedures and even if we know how to do something on other cars, the manuals are there to help avoid costly mistakes. Spending $40 on a set of manuals was best investement I ever made.

to SrKegler,
i have already removed the timing belt but is there ways to look for certain problems that maybe be occurring once i have the head off?

Water pump could go bad, balancer belt could break, timing belt could break, tensioner could leak, idler pully bearings could go bad.

Unless you know all those parts have been replaced recently and are good, might as well replace them now since you have to do all the work anyhow to replace the head gasket.

Just courious, how did you get the timing belt off?

Just keep i mind if you make a mistake it would cost more than if you took it to a shop. When you add in all gaskets, and a head job.

yeah i replaced the timing components in mt dsm and it was only like a week later and the wp went out. so it was staight back to tearing it apart again. pretty much ruined my date night LOL

also a sidenote. there are downlaodable manuals that can be found on this site if u do stilll need it.

My apologies to the OP, I missed the part where he had just replaced all his timing components.

If it hasn't already been done, replace the waterpump and the balance shaft belt.

With the head off, there isn't too much you can do to check for future problems.

thanks for all the comments i now have the balance shaft belt and am buying a new water pump tomorrow i will keep you updated on the progress. if anyone knows of certain brands of water pumps that are recommended please let me know.

OEM only!!!!! It's too much of a hassel changing it to take a chance.
