Head and CAS Identfy

I have been searching and searching and all the good info I am looking for is about 1g stuff. I do not know the difference in the 1g-2g heads or CAS. Iam building a 7bolt for my 96 gsx manual tranny.

I got alot of questions I hope you guys can point me in the right direction.

-How do I know if I have a 1g or 2g head?

-I have read that 95-96 use a different intake camshaft then the 97-99. How do I know which camshaft do I have?

-In the attached picture, I have 2 CAS. Which one do I use? Is one a 1g or 2g, 6bolt or 7bolt?

-I also read I need a turbo throttle body. Attached is a picture of the one I have. Is this a turbo throttle body? If not, what is the difference so i know what to look for?

-I am hoping to try to avoid swapping my intake camshaft IF it turns out I have the wrong head/cam. So with this in mind can someone point me in the right direction on which CAS and or wiring that will need to be done?

I am on a roll right now with this build and it is going very smoothly. I just have this one little hic-up that is kicking my @$$ right now. Been researching all night and morning. Some insight would be greatly appriciated.

Neither of those cas is a 2g cas. Even if you have a 7 bolt, you can still use the 1g cas if that's all you have. It wouldn't matter what cam you have, the 1g cas will work

The 97-99 intake cam will be threaded on the passenger's side.

Your photo shows two 1G cam sensors...you can use either one.

It's a non-turbo throttle body. A turbo throttle body will not have a hose flange on the actual throttle body itself.

You can swap intake cams in about fifteen minutes- it literally takes me longer to remove the valve cover....but it won't matter anyway, because both of your cam sensors are 1G sensors.


If you're using a 1G head on your car, there will be no provision to bolt the factory 95-96 cam sensor to the head....you'll need to run a 90-94 OR 97-99 cam sensor, and do the appopriate wiring.

You don't need to swap cams. Just bolt the cas up after lining it up properly. Use the black top cas so you have less of a chance of getting a cel.

The head doesn't care which cams you put in it.

The head is a 1g. The throttle body is from a 91-94 and you can use the N/T throttle body. The N/T and Turbo throttle bodies are both the same size (60mm if I recall correctly). Instead of an elbow you a silicone coupler.... that is if you are using hard pipes on the UIC side of the piping.

Last question though, Is it possible to install this CAS 180* out?

Holy monkey balls.. You guys are the bomb diggity! Thanks demon. So the thottle sensor is the same on both? That was my only Issue, I think I'm going to be using hard pipes for the Upper Intercooler. Thats all I see in my boxes.

I know this is a Engine management question and its under the wrong thread. I am going to be in need of a ECU. Car didnt come with one, go figure.

What ECU's are compatable now with my setup?

Can I use a GST ecu on a GSX? Does it matter weather its 95-96 or 97-99.

I just want this car to run like it was off the showroom floor. Not looking for any power adders so DSMLink and Eprom are not my prioritiy right now.

I think I have a 97 gst Ecu, I don't remember if I sold it or not. Ill check when I get home. Being that your not running a 2g cas in a 96, the 97-99 Ecus will work because tthey already have the same cas location as a 1g

I'll have to go home to confirm, but I'm pretty sure the throttle body is the same. I will be running a remanfactured TB in my setup. Came with all the sensors, but I have yet to plug it in.

Anyone go CAPS can confirm before I get home from work?

The throttle body themselves is different but I'm not sure about the sensors. They might look the same but might have different pin outs etc.

I meant the 1g n/t has no provision for a throttle body elbow

It doesn't..I thought people used the n/t tb elbow cause it was more like the 2g? Larger than the 1g..

Never mind if that's it in the picture I see why people use that instead of a tb elbow..Boost piping fits right on there..
