Okay, so this is my first post on this site (hi everybody)
My issue is that my 98 talon Base model, 5 speed manual, is having some shifting problems.

It won't go into gear with the clutch down unless you A) Push the gear selector really hard and then it pops a tad aggressively
B) Pump the clutch about 8 times then try to engage gear
C) Keep slight pressure on the gear selector towards the gear then stomp the clutch with your foot, then let off in neutral, and repeat to put it into second (double clutch it)

I consider myself a fairly handy man when it comes to vehicles and can definitely do the repair myself but i don't know what the hell is wrong with it :banghead:

Once engaged in gear the clutch functions perfectly fine.
What do you guys think?

I think your granny shifting not double clutching like you should, did you even see fast and furious? ( sorry couldn't resist)

Perhaps my terminology is off haha, and honestly no i have not seen FnF :(
Either way the issue is confusing to me, i have very limited knowledge of transmission systems outside of replacing clutches, pressure plates, that whole thing but diagnosing things that aren't the big 3 (clutch, pressure plate or throwout bearing) is very difficult for me..

It sounds to me like the clutch is dragging. Put the car on the lift, rev it up in gear with the clutch depressed. If the wheels spin, the clutch is dragging.

If the clutch is not dragging, then check shifter linkages and syncros.

If the clutch is dragging, you either have a leak, or have air, or have improper adjustment, or have a damaged disk or pressure plate, or sticking disk.

Thank you for the quick and informative reply :)

I'll throw the front end up on a jack and see if it is dragging, I don't think its the syncros only because all of the gears are doing it and i don't think that they all went out at once, though its possible and like i said i don't know a hell of a lot about tranny problems haha.

Is it possible its the clutch hydraulics? I just took a peek at it and the clutch fluid is black... :hmm:

I also looked at if the hydraulics were leaking and the fluid level is fine and i see no fluid drips from the master or slave cylinder.

First off look under the dash where the master cylinder comes through the firewall. See any fluid there? Look at your slave cylinder also, peel the boot back some to see if fluid is leaking out. Also check the reservoir for the master cylinder. Clutch fluid does not just disappear if you are low or out you have a leak. If no leaks are found top off the fluid and bleed the clutch a few times to see if that helps.

Ok I just threw it up on jackstands and indeed as you thought Colt, the clutch is dragging. So i'm assuming the course of action is now to replace the clutch and pressure plate?

Not exactly. You need to go underneath your dash and adjust your clutch because if it is dragging that means that It is not fully disengaged when you press the clutch all the way in so you need to adjust accordingly. If that doesn't work then its time for a replacement most likely like Colt said.

Ok, you said it's dragging. When you pull away from a stop, does the clutch grab right near the floor, or does it grab a few inches away from the floor?

If it grabs right near the floor, then sure, check the hydraulic parts.

If it grabs a few inches away from the floor, then check for loose bellhousing bolts, or a damaged disk.

Ok so the clutch starts grabbing, (partial engagement) as soon as you lift your foot even a little, so i should check out the hydraulics for leaking and or failure now?
