Ask Me, Virginia
I'd like to do this mod to my 94 Laser FWD. I have a 93 TSI AWD parts car at my disposal.

I am looking at this writeup but I want to make things as simple as possible.

http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/equal-length-half-shafts-mod-awd-axle-in-a-fwd.402528/

Wouldn't it be easiest to pull the intermediate shaft and axle and install them in one piece? Not sure if that is possible or why the writeup has each one installed independently.

Finally, as far as parts go, I am trying to get them all ordered right the first time if possible.

It seems that all I will need is a new FWD seal correct? Can't I just take the bolts and lockwashers from the donor car?

Not sure if I need the spacer, but the car has A/C and I don't plan to remove it.

Thoughts?

Thanks

You can certainly install the the intermediate shaft and half-shaft as one piece. The write-up is suggesting that you change the seal only for the driver's side as that is the only axle that is being swapped. The author of the write-up may have replaced the seals/bearing on the intermediate shaft.

You will need the specific bolts and washers for the intermediate shaft bracket. JNZ sells them as a kit for about $10. If you have a donor car then by all means, snag the bolts (they have a high shoulder on them as regular bolts will work loose of shear off). You should not need the spacer if you still have A/C. The spacer is only if you do not have the A/C bracket installed. Another way around this is to just cut out that portion of the bracket as well.

You really only need the intermediate shaft though, the half-shaft can be purchased new from most auto suppliers. Hope this helps.

EDIT: I believe this can only be done on the 90-92 FWD trans!!!

In the future, try to provide all pertinent information that would help answer your question -- like what transmission you have -- so we don't have to go looking for it: What trans do I have?

:)

This is perfectly clear. Thanks for your help. Now I know how to proceed.

Will do, in this case it is a 91-92 Trans in my Laser. Sorry for any confusion.

For some reason it will not work on an 89 production year trans. The splines are right but the halfshaft does not line up with the block. I checked this with two different 6-bolt blocks and a few 1g halfshafts. It seems like the diff is in a different location.

You can make it work on later year trans. You just need to install the early year small spline diff. But as a fwd racer I run big spline diffs and have no issues with running the long axle.
