Man, I hope you guys don't start bugging Tom and Dave.

I mean, I totally understand that you 1g guys would want your version of DSMLink as soon as possible. But they really do work around the clock on this thing and asking them when it'll be available again and again is only going to slow them down.

Though, if I see anything about 1g DSMLink on the forums, I'll be sure to let you guys in.

Could someone make a basic outline on how to burn eprom chips? Correct me on my estimation:

*Buy Eprom Burner (USB) and Eprom Chip (from that motes.com site)
*Buy Eprom ECU if you dont already have one
*Socket ECU
*Hook up eprom burner to computer
*Burn chip?
*Hook chip up to socket and go

Im not sure about how to burn chips, since if you bought a blank chip, how would you add the "basic" dsm ECU code?

Does anyone have AIM or MSN that is willing to help me on this?

Kevan, you can take your stock chip from your ECU that you got off of the board before you socket it and put it in your burner and download the ROM image in a binary file. You can then save that binary file on your hard disk and use a hex converter to get it into hex. From there you can mod the file, convert it back to a binary, and send it into your new EPROM.

Thanks for the clarification. Now the only thing I dont understand is how the actual tuning process is carried out. Is it similar to SAFC, GM MAFT, or DSMLink guides to tuning? I mean, is there some basic guideline that is followed when changing the timing or fuel map?

Thanks.

Since 2G guys have had DSMLink for the last decade or so (exaggeration), most of the info you're going to find is concerning 1Gs.

Since 1G DSMLink is now out, I forsee this thread meeting its demise soon as well.

Well i just ask because money for dsmlink and a 95 ecu isnt going to happen all of a sudden. Im wanting to run the 95 ecu in my 99 and then sell the 99 and make some money back. But the 95 ecu wont let my car run properly. Then just socket the 95 ecu and program it to have it run in my 99. I previously owned dsmlink but traded for this car and miss it dearly. I know they had a switch on the programming the would invert the cas. Is there anyway that this would be possible? Kind of like a fix for my addiction but I just dont have to sell out 560 for the link.

I don't see a mass migration to DSMlink on the DSM-ECU list. There are still plenty of people interested in a cheaper solution and people continuing development of code. If you look at the Honda world, there are several free programs like Evilscribe above- Uberdata, Chrome, a few others, and there is the pay program like DSMlink- Hondata. There are advantages and disadvantages for both sides.

All good points. That's what I was hoping for when I had originally started this post as well.

Personally, what I'd like to see is a DSM-specific ECU that allows modifications via a serial or USB connection for a reasonable price.

Sadly, I don't think that'll ever happen.

Don't ask for details yet, but its actually rather close to happening.USB and reasonably priced.

Also, a while back I whipped this up to allow me to edit the 1g eproms in realtime(just like the DSMlink), My original intent was to sell it, but since I don't have the time to support it, I will soon be posting the schematics and software free of charge. Its extremely simple, and total parts are around $50.If time allows, I can add some more features to it as well.

please keep us posted about this. This is the coolest thing since i found out about eprom. who needs to burn a chip when you can program it while in your car

ya, http://users.wpi.edu/~ktarry/dsmromedit.html has the code also.

this is what i *might* do.

and who makes a 28pin chip burner for 60? cheapest i found was for 150 and were about to but it.

only thing i dont link about the burning a chip is its time consuming and not wouldnt exactly "on the run" tuning like dsmlink is.
www.ustr.net Got mine off ebay a long time ago for like 45 bux... used it on my 3rd gen camaro before it died...
(the camaro died-not the programmer) it just has a serious coating of dust...

kind of a nul point due to 1g DSMlink being out eh?

I had it in my 93Talon b4 i switched to a 2g

What makes you say that?

I guess I’m just a fanboi, the support from the DSMlink guys & the product its self SEEMS TO ME to have no parallel, read the features you get with 1g DSM link, its like 5 or 6 products in one, not to mention the fact that if your clueless you can get tuning help by posting your logs..

I agree, their support is excellent (I own DSMLink for my 2g).

I'm not sure why you think that makes hacking on the 1g ECU any less interesting (or the 2g ECU, for that matter), though. I don't see people getting rid of their home-grown megasquirt rigs, or giving up their SAFCs, just because products like DSMLink and AEM's EMS are on the market. Applied to another market, has the existance of JIC FLT-A2 and Tein Flex "complete package" suspensions stopped folks from building setups from Ground Control coilovers and Koni Yellows? Nope. Because people think they can do better than the "made for the masses" packages.

There will always be hackers and tweakers who do things because they can. And that's a good thing, because occassionally, they do it better and advance the state of the art.

Not to mention the ~$500 price difference between DSMLink and burning your own eproms.IMO if you're smart enough to tune your vehicle via the DSMLink, you're smart enough to do it via burning your own eproms.
