1G Guess what caused this TB Damage

I pulled my upper timing belt cover today and found this. The belt has maybe 500 miles on it, which sucks but I'm glad I caught it before it snapped.

I'm tearing into it tomorrow, anyone want to take bets on what caused it? My money is on the oil pan bolts.

This was my friends car and he did the TB job on it so I'm not sure what I'll find.

Has the oil pan been removed before or after install of tb? If so, the front(closest to HB) ones are in wrong spot.

I'm not sure, I haven't really dug into this engine before. My buddy did most of the work to it and I haven't asked him about it yet. It's interesting how it's not a solid groove. It's almost like the belt is deflecting into something.

That's true! Was tensioner and tensioner pulley replaced when tb was done? It does look like its slapping something

He said it was the Gates kit from extremepsi. If the tension is off even a little bit I'm going throw a new OEM tensioner on just to be safe.

One of the oil pan bolts is shorter than the rest. You installed it in the wrong hole. That is the _ONLY_ thing I've seen chew a timing belt up like that.

Same spot and marks that are made when the oil pan bolts are to long.

Yes I was wondering why my belt had a groove it in. Many years ago I had that same problem.

Long oil pan bolt was the problem.

It took me awhile to figure out exactly where the shorter bolts should go so I made this terrible pic for anyone else interested. The two circles are where the short bolts need to be. I had a longer bolt in the left most spot, so I switched it with the short bolt that was just two holes over.
