I want to purchase a DSM in the near future turbo model 2g. I'm wondering how much of an issue traction in a 250-300 WHP GST would be, or should i dish out the extra money and get a Gsx. I do not plan on going any further with power than that, just bolt ons.

I have same boat I have a gst running 300whp on 16g I spin if I launch with full boost at 19psi atm, but if from roll I'll pull hard on the top end if dry.But if I launch with not much boost off the line I don't spin unless wet of course.Wish I had a gsx 5 speed tho.

I thought I'd be happy with a GST, that got old fast. After I turned my boost up from 20-25psi my times at the track got worse, just spin through 1,2&3.

Thanks for the advice, ill just see how much more the GSX is but it sounds like at these power levels its not to big of a deal.

Good luck finding an unmolested GSX, GSTs are hard enough to find. Even ones that have been screwed with are stupid rare. I don't think I've ever even seen another 2g turbo clipse and I work in a rather busy garage. I had been waiting for a GSX for years when I found the GST I have now and rescued it. Base models come and go but turbo cars are gems, if you can find a GST, grab it, you wont really have any traction issues at that power level if you drive with common sense.

You might get lucky and be in the right place at the right time like when I rescued this car.

Good luck, I'd love to see another DSM rescued from the scrap pile, junkyards make my heart sad.

you can program launch controls in a gst...

I personally never owned a AWD so that why i went awd.

Also traction will never be an issue in awd, however crapping out trannys like a ghay pimp could become an issue.

You can also run a lighter pressure plate on a fwd. 2100 (fwd) vs 2600 (awd)
While smoking front tires more, more tire rotations (moving tires around for even wear)

also you will be snow proof (with right tires) in a awd.

for a 1g, there are additional benefits:
-FP rewire/upgrade is easier in AWD
-Less room for sub box/other trunk goodies because of spare tire hump IDK if that applies to 2gs also

Thats all I can really think of.

2g AWD is still one of the cheapest AWD performance cars out there. should easily beat a wrx dollar for dollar(not sti way out of price range)

Personally Id go AWD.

Besides, you can always remove the drive shaft and be fake FWD :sneaky: (don't, seriously)

But If I had to get a 2g FWD, DEFINITELY GET A RAGTOP. then convert to AWD :thumb:

Fwd for freeway pull king with top end, and launch oviously awd for no wheel spin. But yes there are ways to run fwd without spining by adding slicks or lsd's but just less hastle to go awd.

In my area there are at least 3 GST's on craigslist that are un molested right now. 2 gsx's completely stock, ones an auto though. Another gsx that looks modded just sent an email. All of them are clean and straight especially that one manual un modded gsx, but its going for about 5600, and i dont plan on paying that much for just a fun car right now before mods.

Try and talk them down on price for that gsx.Do you know about how many miles are on it?

Maybe, BUT, you live in Washington state. The vast majority of our cars are spread around the middle and northern states and down south they're few and far between(FWIW). Iv'e seen one ad for a GSX in the Houston area since I've been looking 2 years ago and I don't think I've EVER seen one in person.

I know my car was from a region that salted the roads in winter regularly from the rust damage, maybe there's a pattern here.

90 thousand miles on that gsx for 5600, pretty good deal. Amd a talon tsi awd with 90 miles on it for 6500... there quite a few but there pricey. That talon is perfect though.

GSX beats GST on the 0-60 by something, on the quarter mile GSX is a little quicker but not noticeable. I would say about the same. If you want fast take offs get the GSX, if you want to race on highway doing pulls get the GST. If you want to save some money on gas get the GST. I'm selling my GSX for 3500.

I would go with a gsx, I'm completing a 1gina2g in a 96 eclipse gsx rebuilt with some internal performance parts. I might sell it when I'm done with the project if I get the chance to complete it ha.

I had a stock 98 gst years ago and was looking in to upgrading it to somewhere around 300whp was my goal , so I bought link injectors and a 16 g ....etc then the shock towers rotted out before I could get every thing installed so I sold it. Looked for a few months for a gsx and could not find one so u bought a super clean .96 gst and got all my goodies installed and was just shy of 300 whp and was happy with it. Never really had any issues with wheel spin to much ... If 250- 300 is all your looking for a gst will be fine .... But I got the itch for more power so I bought a gsx

I would definitely go with a GSX. I currently have a GST and every time I gas it I regret not getting a GSX. It scorches the tires from a stand still and even when I gas it from a roll it spins 2nd gear and a little bit of 3rd. I havent dyno'd my car but Im estimating I have a little over 350whp. I have a 20g turbo on 20lbs and its not fun at all. Its actually depressing when I see my friend with a GSX with less mods than I have just leave me and I play catch up. Highway pulls are fun but unfortunately they don't have "run-from-a-roll" at the dragstrip. LOL
If you have a choice go with the GSX!

Yea.. I have had both and I would say go with the gsx for simple traction issues. Both of the gst's were ok at stock levels but.. Once bolt ons were added the car became a challange when you punched it. I would say my gsx is much less stock than either gst I had. When I step on it it just shoots off.

What if he gets an LSD? Will that help with FWD launches at higher HP range?

I have a GST and A GSX, stock everything on the gst and with pushing 16 psi 1 & 2 gear are almost useless after about 4k rpm. The GST is great on the highway but I love how the gsx handles, pulls hard in wet or dry conditions and I can hang with the trucks in snow. So to me the GSX is the way to go besides it using alot more gas than the GST. Good luck !
