1G Gsx drive shaft question

So I was under my car doing some work and noticed my drive shaft isn't all the way in the transfer case . It looks like it should slide all the way on but there looks to be like a 2 inch gap. Is this normal??

Do you have a picture of what you're seeing? There should be some forward/backward play....2 in seems like a lot though.

Looks like the dust cover/sleeve slid off the back of the transfer case.

Would the drive shaft being that far off make it leak?

From the picture it looks like your dust shield is just slid back. It should be bottomed out on the back of the tcase housing. The drive shaft itself should only have maybe an inch of motion inside this shield if you grab it and slide it back and forth. Here's a shot of a 1g.

its designed like this to allow engine movement back and forth. Its supposed to be in the case just enough to allow it to seal.

Yup. At the very least your dust shield is out of place. Likely rattles too.

After that situation with the dust shield has been *ahem* dusted, are there any more issues?

I don't think I have the dust shield the old owner must have taken it off and never replaced. Is it a part that is necessary? The car leaks around the yoke area and oil is on the car around that area. That's what made me think it was to far out and not sealing? I read you can but something inside the yoke to stop it from leaking but that post didn't make much sense.

Yes, there is a seal that could be leaking if it is torn or if the drive shaft is slid back past it. But for your drive shaft to be slid back far enough to be out of the seal it would probably fall off while driving. Check the seal and check the dust cover.

Usually it's the yoke that leaks. The yoke is hollow with a plug in the end of it behind the universal joint. I would install a yoke recall kit, and a new transfer case tail seal.

Your not seeing it bro but it's there. In the pic you posted that's the dust cover (piece with chipped black paint and rust look). And it's clearly pushed back abit. Go underneath the car and grab it with your hand and pull forward. Once it's back in place you will see the driveshaft. And I would do like Donnie is saying.

I apologize for the ignorance. ill take a look at it when I get home. thanks for the help ill look into the recall kit and replace seals.
