Ok, so I have a 2nd gen GSX with good motor, tranny and drivetrain but the body is in horrible condition. I bought a GS shell as well that is in great condition and I was planning on swapping the full engine and drivetrain from the GSX to the GS's better body. Does anyone know if this is even possible and if so how would I go about doing this and is there anything I should know/look out for when I'm doing it? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

Way to much work. The GS has the engine facing the opposite direction.

Like stated it's way more work than it's worth. The motor mounts are different so you'll be fabbing up new mounts and that's just the start.

You're better off find a GSX/GST shell to start with.

Well that I already knew and anticipated having to work around. I've been trying to get the GSX running for about a month now and the swap is the best alternative I have found. With some rearranging of the engine bay will it work? And will the frame of the GS allow for the swap of the AWD drivetrain as well? The work isn't what bothers me but I really need to figure out whether or not it is actually going to work.

Plan to spend a couple grand just to get it all fabbed up to work. It WILL work, but you're going to need a decent amount of time and money. This isn't just a "cut here, weld here" kind of swap.

My advice, sell the gs shell and get a gsx shell off here, you shouldn't have a problem finding a nice one.

What's wrong with the GSX shell thats so bad? Just start swapping if it's body panels and interior etc... Bumpers are easily swapped. And trust me body work on the roof and other panels is MUCH cheaper than a 4g63 swap into a 420a platform.

Dammit, ^ took my reponce.. i saw the tittle and was like.. clearly this is simple alphabet logistics..LOLz. add an X and your good to go...

Use body panels on the GSX. Also if you can find a GST body it would make it 10X easier.

If you don't have the abilities to search on this site, then you probably can't do it.

But seriously, it will be a pain in the ass. I don't know if anyone has done that. If you had a GS-T it would be a different story though. It will be alot of work, time, sweat, and money for a little payoff in the end. Money wise anyways.

From what ive herd is that, the only person that was able to do it completely welded a GST front clip onto his GS. but do a search and you will see the head ache.

4G63 will ONLY fit in the GST or GSX
420A will ONLY fit in the RS or GS

Hit the shootout. A guy here has a Chrysler Sebring that is running a GSX drivetrain. Ran in the low 12's. All custom mounts, no clip welding

There is a guy over on talk that has pulled this off. He documented the whole thing and has TONS of pictures. It is not something an average mechanic or welder could pull off.

Here is the link: 4G63 swapped into a 420a Chassis. I need advice. - DSM Forums: Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Laser, and Eagle Talon Forum: DSMtalk.com

That is pretty damn impressive work! I think a look at that thread is all the motivation an average person would need to think twice about attempting this swap.

swapping the front clip is actually way easier than most people assume

The payoff will actually be pretty big, because you would be paying insurance on a nt rather than a turbo car

That is exactly why I always refer people to that thread. 99.9% of the people asking about the 420a>4g63 swap could never pull it off.

The same could be said for buying a talon over an eclipse. My insurance on my awd talon is alot less than my gs eclipse was.

I noticed that GSX's cost more to insure than my TSi although I'm not surprised by it at all.

I've seen it done, but I wouldn't recommend it. My friend wreck his GSX and bought a GS to swap.

It took him over 6 months to get the entire swap done just because of the shear amounts of labor that is involved. Not to mention crafting your engine/trans mounts. You can use the stock roll stops if you switch the cross frame. Or at least he switched them as he had poly inserts in the xframe.
