I have tried to search for this topic but can't find anything that seems the same. The other day I went to start my car and it starting grinding and then the car started. I thought my starter was bad so I replaced the starter and the first 5 starts it was fine but then it started grinding again while starting. The car always seems to start just takes awhile and sounds horrible. Anyone else have this problem before? When I had the starter out I looked at the flywheel teeth and they seemed to be ok. Had a little wear on them but nothing horrible.

FOr me it seems to happen with every trans pull and re-install, but i have a FWD starter palte and AWD trans (modded plate) which i thought was the issue.. what it ended up being is that after the starter install it wouls seem to come loose if it wasn't perfectly seated in the area where it sits in the plate.. Iput the bolts in most of the way but loose enough i can wiggle the starter a little, then i find where the starter sits the firmest and tigten the bolts there, don't be affraid to put soem torque on them either.

Another thing i found making them come loosse is hacving the groiudn wire on the starter bolt (the one always cameloose) so i moved it to the bolt for the bell housing where the water pipe secures to the same top bolt

Another thing i've done (aside from rebuilding the inner gears as in that thread) is to take it off, clean the gear and bedix/solenoid with brake cleaner and then use a LIGHT oil on it that wont' attract too much dust/dirt (i use air tool oil)

But the main thing is proiper alignent and torqueing of the bolts

also if the starter comes loose don't forget to check the upper moutning bolt ear as they OFTEN break when starting the car with a loose starter (lucky i TIG weld and have fixed a few, but that's something warranty don't cover)

And one more yet, makesure the trans bell housing bolts are tight, they sometimes can back out a little causiugn shifting issues as well as startin issues

Thanks I will check again to see if the starter came loose at all. I have not done any Trans work at all. Just one morning went to start it and started grinding so I replaced the starter. That seemed to work for about 3 days then back to grinding again.

OK so I have done some research on this and still am completely stumped. I tried shimming the starter out to see if it was plugging in to far. After shimming the starter spins free so its not in to far. I took the plate apart and looked and the flywheel has wear on it like the starter is not plugging in far enough to start. What would cause the starter not to plung in far enough to the flywheel. I just put this starter on and have had problems with it after about 10 starts. The transmission is not loose and have not done any other work to the car to cause any problems. I don't know what to try next

i had a friend who was gonna sell me a car and every time you started it would make this horrible grinding noise. I asked him what it was said something about the starter hitting a plate and i would need to take a dermal to it and grind something down. never got the car so i cant tell ya if it actually would work .

Yes, Sorry I thought I posted my fix earlier. Ended up being a bad battery terminal. The connection was bad. Sometimes it would start fine because the wires were in good contact then the next time the connection would be bad and have the grinding. I replaced the battery terminal and the problem went away.

Well thank you I would be trying that tomorrow. One of my terminals is very loose and the other is getting there. I've had this problem for quite a while hope this works because my car won't even start.

Well i replaced both terminals and sure enough the grinding still there, any advice?
