Grinding noise while starting

Alright well just recently I noticed that when I start my car up cold something will grind as soon as the engine starts up, then immediately goes away, so it's not constant or anything. I pulled the clutch safety switch so I'm not using the clutch when I start, and after the car is warm, I'll shut it off, turn it on, and there will be no grinding noise... Anyone have a clue what this could be?

Sounds to me like the starter is sticking a little bit.

I totally agree with mrbill86. My buddies Mazda 6 does the same thing when it's cold.

same happened to me on a 03 eclipse gt...then it just went out and i replaced it

Ya I accidentally dropped my starter one while doing a clutch and it started making the same noise. Put another starter in and the noise went away.

Alright, so is this something that should be replaced asap or does it really matter?

You can wait a little while but it depends if it's the starter making the noise or if when it goes to engage is scraping on the transmission. Go to a junkyard or buy a used one off this site and you're back on the scene .
I know I have an extra or two.

Okay well if I don't have to replace like right away I think I'll wait a bit, because there's other things my car needs before a starter, and I'm tight on money. Thanks a lot guys

If it was me, I would go ahead and replace it to help keep from damaging the teeth on the flywheel. Like the other guys said, you don't have to right away, but do it as soon as you can.

You guys sure its not just the engine running with no oil pressure for a second or two during cold startup? Some people could mistake light knocking for grinding... just a thought.....

Well I guess we'll find out, I just changed my oil, so maybe that'll help.
