Always been a user of the site as a go to when working on these! Finally added my favorite, of the base DSM's to the driveway, a 95 Esi and a 95 GS. The 95 Esi is the new DD for to and from work. The 95 GS is going to be a resto-mod project, big plans for it. I may start up a build thread in the spring for it. The Talon has surprised me for a $1000 ex-show car. After tearing all the custom panels, speakers, and wiring out of it, I started to transform it into a clean, factory spec car. Its going smoothly so far. Taking it day by day. By the time I'm done with it. Everything would have been taken off and replaced. But as far as on the road, its been awesome. (w/ the exception of two odd problems)
1. In 2ed gear under load (normal or hard acc) I get a vibration comparable to torque steer. Except extremely rapid, so I'll call it vibration. (from left to right) And a rumble at exactly 40-45 mph. I get the same rumble at highway speeds, but now, only at certain steering angles. (not all the time). I inspected the front end completely. Discovered both shocks are blown. Upper ball joint's were bad, along with worn sway bar links. I replaced the upper control arm's, and sway bar links, haven't got to the shocks yet. Tires were balanced, rims were inspected, and had it aligned. But no difference, at all.
2. Only at or very near 1/2 tank, does the car emit overwhelming gas fumes. There are no apparent leaks. I just quickly visually inspected the fuel filler neck, down to the tank, followed up to the front of the car, looked around injectors, fuel filter, and rail line. Didn't smell or see anything (by the time I did this it was at 1/4 tank and the smell was long gone).
The odd thing was, I just happened to have a friend following me somewhere during the smelly 1/2 tank time, and he said un-burned fuel was just bellowing out of the back of the car. He could smell it from behind me with the windows up, vent's on recirculate, and blower motor off it was so massive.
Which means, if I have un-burnt fuel bellowing out of my exhaust as he says. Must be dumping through the engine at a un-necessary rate, correct?
Parts I've changed in the last month are, the suspension parts mentioned above, all new exhaust and o2 sensors, plugs, wires, coil, entire cooling system, cleaned IAC (still needs replacing), and a other odds and ends I can't think of right now.
Thanks for reading! Hope to become an active member of the forums! Here's a picture of the projects.
