i am just getting into cars and know just about nothing and im learning different things from my friends but i just bought a 1990 eagle talon tsi i got a real bad rod knocking and ive been told to change my rods and pistons and i want to throw a 20g turbo in what would be a good way to run 20psi with out hurting the engine

without fixing it and tuning that car, it's going to slaughter your turbo. don't do it

the first thing i would do is have the engine knock diagnosed by a mechanic. a rod knocking is a sign of a bad rod bearing. get the knock fixed before you add any other modifacations to the car. once the knock issue is solved then it would be safe to start moding the car. 20g is a really good turbo to start out with in my opinion, but with adding a bigger turbo and adding more boost be sure to add supporting mods to the car (injectors, fuel pump, wide band afr, some type of tuning, possibly a fmic) otherwise other engine damage could occur.

my friends told me to change my rods and piston first and they think that will get rid of the rod knock

If you have rod knock, you need to rebuild. Since you don't know what caused it, it could have been one of a hundred things.

You need rod and main bearings (you may not need to replace the rods unless they have been fatigued) oil pump, water pump, timing belt, head gasket, piston rings, and quite a few other parts.

Its not going to be cheap, especially if its done right. If this is your first car you may be better off selling it to someone who has the know how to fix it, and buying one in drivable condition.

If you want to tackle the rebuild yourself, take some time and search for and read the numerous rebuild threads here so you can get the info you need. Good luck :thumb:

First step - Park the Car
Second Step - Get a Manual.
Third Step - Read the Manual.

Don't attempt to mod the car in any way until you fully know how to check clearances. Once you know that - you'll know how to resolve your engine issue.

rod knock comes from a wiped bearing allowing the rod to move around on the crank or "knock". i would first drain the oil pan and then take it off to see if there are metal shavings in the pan, but with it knocking it most likely will have shavings in it.

agreed. If you've run the car for more than 5min w/ true rod knock, you've probably damaged the crank as well. First thing is to get some1 who knows to confirm knock. Checking for shavings is a good start to verify the knock. IF you see shavings, pull the oil pan start w/ the rod caps. If the crank is damaged (any catch w/ your nail AT ALL constitutes pulling the engine to remove the crank), you'll need a rebuild. If it's not damaged but you c a spun bearing, then maybe, MAYBE you can take a emery clothe to the journal. But at this point I'd check the main caps too i guess.

To put it simply, you dont just "put" rods and pistons in a motor... And it is really not a job for someone just getting into cars. Find yourself a local dsmer who knows what he is doing and learn... Dont take this wrong, but you going out, buying a manual, and starting to rip into a 4g63 by yourself, or any other engine for that matter, is going to result in either a dsm going to the junkyard or someone else down the line having a bigger headache then your about to deal with.

When going into a vehicle do everything right. The first thing you need to do is fix everything wrong with it before you start modding it. I bought my car from a youngish kid, around 19-20. He claimed everything was fine with her. This was far from the truth. On top of a broken bolt in the intake manifold, there were numerous bolts missing off the downpipe and a couple leaky gaskets that are in need of repair. There was also 2 cracks in the valve cover. Also there was a shitty wiring job that killed my battery numerous times because the dipshit decided he was going to wire up a toggle switch to the fans and he had no idea what he was doing.

Before i even think about modding I am already replacing the timing belt, head gasket and every other gasket on this vehicle just so i have the piece of mind to know everything has been done correctly and i wont be caught with any surprises down the road. Do it right the first time so you arent spending more money if you run into any catastrophic failures.

to the op..
I bought my car the same way! in august and now its finally fixed! I didnt know much about cars i thought it was the lifters so i replaced those on accident. luckily i had my uncle who knows his stuff so we swapped out my 7 bolt block and got a block off a 95 talon that we believe came from a 92 because it was a 6 bolt.. used the same head from the car and now its running as good as new! smooth ride only mistake was i didnt get a turbo car :/ oh well tho.. 4G63 still pulls hard without turbo! Anyway
the junkyard is a good place! if you get lucky
Good luck man
