Hey guys, I just bought a 1990 Talon TSI AWD. I got it home just fine when I bought it but now, about two weeks later, its starting drive like garbage.

First problem is that when the motor isn't warmed up, it absolutely will not idle whatsoever, it will just cut and die, and when it is warmed up its idle goes up and down like its "breathing" or something.

Second problem is also when it is cold. When i take off cold it bucks and kicks and sometimes wont even go anywhere, just backfires a lot.

Third problem is when it is running, i can only use about 1/6 throttle, any more than that and it just cuts and sputters.

If you need to know anymore about the mods or anything just ask and I will see if I know, the guy I bought it off of didn't tell me much about it.

There's several things you need to check out since you're a new owner for a used car. +1 on boost leak test. Check everything, even if it's not relative to your issue, i.e. plugs, o2 sensor...the car acting up at anything past 1/6 throttle could likely be a MAF issue, mine was doing that until I switched MAFs. But I don't want to send you in 5 different directions though. Does your throttle body have the coolant hoses/fiav blocked off? That could be a possible issue for your "no idle on a cold start". Look/poke around in your engine bay and see if you see anything that looks out of place. How familiar are you with DSMs?

This is my first turbo DSM and my first 1G so its all new to me. Yes the coolant hoses are blocked off I believe. And how do you make your own boost leak tester?

It's fairly easy. Find a coupler to match the size of your turbo inlet, a PVC end cap for pipe, two worm-gear clamps, and an air fitting for a tire. I'm sure there's a write up on here for it. It's going to vary because everyone has their own preference on how to build it. Some even put a pressure gauge on the endcap so they can see how much pressure they're charging their system with. Do a quick search I'm sure there's something on here.

On another note, do you have any means to run a log with Link and post it on here. I won't be able to tell you anything but I'm sure someone will chime in, as I myself haven't worked with Link yet. Greek to me seeing as I just have a chipped eprom.

If by Link you mean DSM link, then yes. I will need to borrow a friends laptop and I can have log tomorrow morning sometime. I have never used it before but I will use ecmlink101 [ECMTuning - wiki] for reference.

Yes, DSMlink.

Is your mod list 100% current? I noticed you don't have any gauges listed..was wondering if you do, how much vac you're pulling when it does idle, and what your AFR is if you have a wideband.

I do have Autometer Boost, oil, a/f gauges. I just went out and checked and noticed that the bottom half of my intake boot is ripped. Could that be one the problems as well? And what is a good replacement?

Yes that is a big problem. That's what we consider a major boost leak.

Another stock one from a salvage yard...or you can check out Dejontool...they have some pretty nice pieces and can be setup for whatever maf you want to use.

Alright I will order one from Dejon tomorrow morning then. Thanks for the help and I apologize for my lack of knowledge on turbo systems! :ohdamn:

No sweat man. Did you check their site out? Look around, you might be able to find a better deal with another manufacturer, I'll be getting one of their inlet pipes eventually.

Yeah I checked around a little but I found one from Dejon that I like its only $200. I know I shouldn't go the cheap route but I'm on a budget.

And to anyone on here that could give me a horsepower estimate on my setup at 24 psi that would be cool cause I don't know where there is an AWD dyno in northwest PA.

OK another quick question before I order, am I OK to order without tubes, or with Charcoal Can and Valve Cove Vent hose connections?

Is your charcoal canister removed? Check all of your EGR hoses, as well as And that's not a bad price for a turbo inlet pipe. Dejon makes some pretty nice pieces, so don't think you're going the cheap route, it was definitely a good choice. Again, as far as your idle problem, take into consideration your coolant lines blocked off. If they are, that's a high likely culprit because your fast idle works off of heat from the coolant. That's why your engine idles higher on a cold start. Look up how the FIAV works and you'll probably have a better understanding of it. It's natural for idle issues with no coolant going to it. You may even want to get a block off plate so you can remove the lower half of your throttle body for a cleaner looking setup. But do look at other things as possibilities as well, don't put all your eggs in one basket with the blocked coolant lines.

If you don't want the high price tag on the dejon intake (however it is a good intake) Chromeintakes on ebay makes a good quality intake pipe as well.

For the tubes, you want the recirculation tube for sure. The only other one I personally put on is the valve cover tube. Otherwise you can remove that one also and just put a mini filter on the valve cover (which is what I always do) Personal preference there. None of my dsms have egr or charcoal canisters so I never get those.

Do you have any blow-by issues with that filter hooked to your valvecover? I have my PCV removed, intake capped off, and fittings on my valve cover ran to catch can. I had some blow-by and ended up with a soaked breather filter after a few months.
