Vancouver,
Hello
Bought a 1g eagle talon earlier tonight. It drove just fine, no issues at all, and then all of a sudden it started to hesitate every time I gave it some gas. It started happening more and more until i couldnt drive it more. I had no place to pull over so I had to drive it as long as I could to get to the rest area.
I opened the hood and the exhaust manifold was glowing red. After letting it sit and starting it again it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders and had barely enough power to move. I had it towed tow.
Any suggestions guys?

Ill go check the compression either today or tomorrow. Check the oil and coolant, vaccume lines , shaft play, etc.

Please guys, any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Just a little over 100 miles on it.
What would cause the change in the timing? Could it be the timing belt tensioner?
Cam sensor?
I do have to note that when I pulled over the exhaust did rattle. I'm sure that it didn't do that when i test drove the car before I purchased it.

Ill check the timing first and take it from there.

Another question would be if I possibly damaged my turbo when I shut the car off when my manifold was bright red?

Thanks for all the help so far.

the car's running lean, if the egts are hot at the manifold its due to a lack of fuel, if you had to much back-pressure it would probably stall

sounds like your catalytic converter is plugged up.

Check the hydro tensioner and timing. The rattle you heard could be the result of a bent valve. Pulling the head to check everything would be a good idea. T-25 turbo I'm assuming. Remove the turbo and check your oil lines for coking. The turbo will probably have to be rebuilt. Ethier way the repair bill isn't gonna be pretty. Keep us posted.

Check your base timing with a timing light.
Did the car's coolant temp get hot?
1g's have a CAS that is adjustable and it is possible that the fasteners loosened up and allowed the CAS to retard the timing.

CAS is on the passenger side of the valve cover connected to the end of the intake cam.

This happened in my 6-bolt swap, didnt tighten those two CAS bolts down after i timed it to 5* btdc and thank god i caught it when i noticed the stuttering. Couldve wiggled loose while drive.

If thats not it, check timing marks. You couldve skipped teeth over time during your drive.

Inspect Turbo, couldve seized up while on your drive.

Inspect Exhaust system, couldve plugged cat while drive.

Im not sure but cant a giant boost leak cause the car to run excessively rich and lose power and make the mani. glow red?

Delete the cat and rule out that option. :)

Sounds like the exhaust cam gear jumped timing (retard). I have seen guys retard exhaust a few degrees for spool up (kinda like anti lag, dumping fuel in the exhaust) and end up with a glowing manifold..

The temperature never went up. It stayed below the halfway point at all times.

Cannt wait till i get off work to check this thing out.

OK.
I checked the turbo, it has some shaft play, up and down. Its pretty noticeable, but it does spin freely. I doubt that was the problem. Would the shaft play decrease with the engine running and oil lubing the turbo?
Not enough light to do anything else, it will have to wait till tomorrow once i get off work :(

Thanks for all the help so far. Much appreciated.

You mean running rich.

If he was running THAT lean it would have different symptoms.

like i said, could he have a boost leak, and running massively rich.

While driving he could have slowly opened up a boost leak, or even popped an IC coupler off, he said the car had no more go.

The other day my alternator gave out on my 1g. Same symptoms you had. It was night time so when I stopped and popped the hood I could see the middle of the manifold glowing a little bit. Same thing, the car actually cooled down instead of heat up. Ttetzner could be right. If the alternator goes, the injectors and pump lose power causing it to run lean and light up the exhaust manifold.

Pop off the alternator and get that tested before you start dismantling the motor.

CLT test. Find out, there's no point in guessing whats wrong, when you can buy the tester for $30 at harbor freight and leave the guessing game for the children.
