I was out driving and a heater core hose started to leak, therefore the car ran out of coolant and i pulled over and i opened the hood and the exhaust manifold and dumptube were glowing red. So my question is, could the car being out of coolant cause those parts to glow this red. Also, i didn't have any previous problems with the manifold and the o2 housing is a verry recent upgrade. Also for the coolant hose it will be an easy fix but that still leaves the glowing factor in play. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well, my stock manifold doesn't glow, but my hotside does. Those exhaust gasses are around 1000 degrees, that's plenty to cause your pieces to glow. Especially if it's a tubualr mani, that is'nt as thick as the stock mani. My titanium headers on my dirtbikes can glow bright bright red if I'm tearing into it.

well the glowing red part would mean the engine is getting super hot inside, either due to no coolant or running lean. i'd fix the hose, fill it up with coolant and drive it at night. pull over and look to see if it is still glowing red. if not you fixed your problem. if its still red then you're most likely running lean. keep in mind anytime you make a hard pull the manifold will most likely glow a little. but leaking coolant is just asking for trouble.

I've seen the Stock Manifold or 2g manifold in a 1g glowing red running on a 14b dn 16g more than once. It gets effin hot. It will cool down or crack. Cracking is bad and usually happens on cheaper and thinner manifolds that cool off too quick. It can happen on an OEM or Good aftermarket manifold if you cool it down too quick.

Engine and Intake temps are what you wanna worry about.
Lower Intake temps = Less Knock
Safe Engine Temps = Less Parts failure and Less Knock as well

Is your engine running hot? Are you logging? Whats your knock count? Things like this will let the vets on here know if your engine is fine.

Those will all be things I have to look into. I do have DSMlink but am not too savvy with it. I think I can manage how to check the temps from running a log and after I replace the hose I will check those things and report back.

Thanks for the help.

well that glowing hot manifold is going to cause alot of engine bay heat, and if your dipstick pops out for whatever reason with a glowing manifold you will have a nice big oil fire.

Yeah if you don't have something holding your dipstick down then fab something. A small o-clamp around the dipstick and a spring from a set of drum brakes will do nicely.

No No he is not getting blow by his problem is Glowing Manifolds. Blow by is a common problem. Blow + Red Hot manifold = Oil Fire which is a even worse thing to happen. He needs to make sure his dipstick is secure in the tube so that does not happen.

How were you driving it when you checked the manifold? Also is the car still running the same? I know when i was breaking in my motor my manifold glowed red, but that was because of all the friction from the rings seating. If you ran it out of coolant the piston to wall clearances might have been real close causing high EGT's.

Honestly fairly hard, I had let off and literally right then i looked around my gauges and dash and notice the heat skyrocketing so i pulled over as fast as possible. and the car hasnt been driven since this happend(last night), and i'll drive it one of the days during this week cause ive got to fix the coolant hose(s) and also replace that dipstick and I think just crimp it for the meantime.

Also what do you guys think of possible engine damage? I didn't hear any engine noise.

well if you were driving it hard, then the glowing manifold is normal. As far as the engine damage, once you get the line fixed drive the car until warm and make sure everything is good. Its pretty normal for our manifolds to glow after a hard pull. IF you can try and get a heat shield, it was put on for a reason.

Alright thanks for all the help guys. I will definitely try everything that was mentioned. And okay LOL okay man ill try and get a hold of a heat shield... but i was also thinking of upgrading to the FP manifold would i still need the shield? id assume i would but just wondering.

Sorry my names different because my brother was already logged into tuners... im DSMking90 though.

i'd heatwrap the fp manifold. I have a serious problem killing alternators unless my exhaust is wrapped. you could get it ceramic coated and that'd help hold the heat in the manifold and o2 housing. if you want to see the nice fp manny.

HOLY CRAP i just posted a thread about my alternator dying out on me all the time. maybe this is part of the problem to that.
