I have a garrett t3/t4 installed on my gst (rebuilt 420a) and my best friend just gave me a 16g ported 20g turbo. would it be smart to swap the turbos or is the garrett turbo just as good. which turbo would be faster?

Swapping turbos isn't going to net u amazing power gains unless your switching to an obviously bigger turbo. If I were you I would fine tune the current setup you have because I couldnt imagine that you are running alot of boost on your current garret turbo

As mentioned, more info is required. What are your goals, do you want top end speed or quick spool? Are you looking for a dyno queen or something highly street able?

You need to figure out what turbo's you actually have as well.

What's a 16g ported 20g? Need alot more info, is it a 420 with a turbo or a 4g63 swap? Fuel mods? Tuning software? More info and clarification please.

Its a garrett 50 trim and im running 6psi, and im really not sure what ported 20g means. My friend who gave it to me said its a 16g turbo that was ported to a 20g. Maybe he didnt know what he was talking about. I need to install my greddy boost controller first and im hoping to get the car tuned to run 10psi

You should be running a T25 for 6psi. You're giving up about 1500rpms of positive manifold pressure in exchange for airflow that the turbo will never produce at that low of a boost level.

You can't port a turbo into the next wheel size. That's like saying you're going to bore your engine into a 350 Chevy, or you went to sleep today and woke up yesterday.

Still, 10psi? On that turbo?

Do you know how to read a compressor map, son? Apparently not or you may have chosen a turbo that better-suits the boost pressure and engine displacement.

Let me spell this out for you. Here's the map for a T04E50 which you claim to be running.

A quick calculation using your boost pressure to determine the airflow via the plots on the left of the graph is:

(14.7 + 10) / 14.7 = 1.68

So PR = 1.68.

Plotting just shy of 1.7 on the left while remaining in the 78% efficiency island will net you 26-28lb/min MAX.

There are PLENTY of turbos out there that will net you the same amount of airflow while spooling 1000 or so rpms sooner than a T04E50, meaning you'll have 1000rpms of additional power. What more could you ask for?

Do us all a favor and take a picture of your engine, the best pictures you can of your current turbo and a picture of the turbo your friend has. I don't know why people are trying to navigate this maze in the dark.

What hp goals are you trying to reach? What added performance mods do you have?

I want to get up to 250-350 hp. The only performance mods i have is a garrett 50 trim turbo, hks bov, hks exhaust, tial wastegate, aem intake, front mount intercooler, stage2 clutch, and short throw shifter.

So can you please give me as much suggestions of things i should get to give my car more power. thank you!

That guide is for the 4g63. You have a 420a, correct? It may be hard to find information on that. But basically, if you want more boost, you have to strengthen the motor. One of the biggest strengths of the 4g63 is forged pistons. Not sure what else, but you should look into that for a 420a.
