Garrett turbo on a 4g63 and a 420a...

OK will a 420a turbo fit on a 4g63 turbo? I was thinking you can just turn it around...am I right or is there more to it? And would there be any difference performance wise?:coy:

you have to reposition the turbo and use a 4G63 turbo manifold with a T3 style flange and you can use it. and the only performance difference is that you can get a better tune with a 4G63(IMO).

Well I have a 4g63. The manifold in the pic is not mine. This is a turbo I can get a pretty good deal on, but does any know the exact specs on this turbo? Any info would be appreciated.
 
Why go through all the work to install it?

That turbo's no hybrid monster- it looks like the T25G used on Nissan SR20 applications:

A stock 2G DSM T25 would yeild nearly the same performance.

I was reading the specs the guy that is selling the turbo had and he said it could put out anywhere from 350hp to 400 hp. I'm not sure if that is the same turbo. They look very similar. I guess the only way to know for sure is to get those #'s on the turbo.

....and every turbo that's sold on eBay has less than 5k miles on it. :rolleyes:

My point is that people will tell you anything you want to hear to make a sale....butmy trained eyes tell me that compressor wheel would never flow enough air to make 400hp.


Unless this turbo's a SUPER good deal (like, not much more than free), I would pass on it. In order to make this turbo work you're going to need:

- T3-flanged exhaust manifold
- External wastegate
- Custom o2 housing
- Custom oil drain
- Custom-built intake pipe to accept the two-bolt flange on the compressor cover


You could pick up a nice used Small 16G for $200-$300 which will work well with your stock fuel system up to 15psi, bolt directly to your 2G exhaust manifold, use all of your existing coolant lines, use your 2G oil drain with a slight modification, and fit your 2G o2 housing as well. The only accessories you'd have to buy would be a j-pipe and an oil supply line, and you'd have a turbo that with an OEM fit that will most likely outflow the turbo in your initial post.

Thats part of the reason I didn't get it, because it seemed a little to good to be true. I appreciate all of the info you have gave me so far. I see you have quite of bit of mods. I'm in the process of getting bigger injectors and a 255 fuel pump. I'm looking to eventually make 550awhp at most. What turbo would you consider?

Are you planning on doing this all at once, or possibly in two sets of upgrades?

It costs a ton to make 550whp, and you'll break a lot of parts getting there. ;)
 
The reason I ask is a 550whp turbo will be expensive, large, laggy, and not much fun on the street for someone who's used to a rather stock DSM....not to mention the amount of costly engine modifications required to make that amount of power and handle the boost levels needed to produce 550whp.

I believe you'd be happier for now with something a little more streetable in the 16G / 18G / 20G / Garrett 50-trim / Holset HX35 range. Any of these turbos will be capable of 350whp, which isn't enough to prompt upgrading the engine internals.

Trust me- 350whp is going to feel scary fast compared to what you're used to as it's nearly double the horsepower of your current setup.


I don't know how well-funded you are, but the "horsepower-to-money-spent" chart doesn't stay linear for long. The funds you dish out take a sharp turn upward once you decide you want to make big power. If it costs $1,000-$1,500 to make 300hp, it'll cost $3,000 to make 400hp and $10,000 to make 600hp. You see what I'm getting at.

Yea I see where your getting at. Do you think a garrett gt35 is better or a holset hx35?
 
I'd choose the Holset. I build turbos and the HX35 is rebuildable in case something were to happen where the GT35R isn't rebuildable. Another factor is the cost....a rebuilt HX35 can be had for less than half of what a new GR35R would cost, although the GT35R is a proven race turbo.
