This is a weird problem ive just recently encountered... My gas gauge is all over the place...When i fill my car up the gauge will go up to the full line then it will work until a quater tank or so is consumed...Then all the sudden it will just drop...ive noticed that it will go goofy when im on a hill and such...what might you think this problem is because im confused as of now...

sounds like yur fuel level sending unit is bad ... theres an open in the resistor which is causing it the drop off once it hits that certain amount of fuel

Because of their saddle-bottom to go over the driveshaft, the AWD tanks have two level senders. Also, the return line from the engine works as a jet pump to pull gas from the driver's side to the passenger side (and, the fuel pump). Getting an accurate reading from the senders has always been a shortcoming of the design, but it should work better than it sounds yours is.
You could try wrestling with it, or remember to reset your tripmeter at ever fill-up.
I believe the VFAQ still has a band-aid link on the site, but I'm on a backup computer without my links just now.

haha yea I bought a new sending unit off of someguy in the classifieds and havent found time to do it. I saw the Vfaq and I was like "I don't really feel like doing that" haha but yea thanks for the explanation even though I posted like 2234 months ago. Always a good man Defiant. :thumb:

haha and yea I have been hitting the trip meter ever since. Thank god for that little orange gas light also. I get near 300 miles to the tank and I am coming up on 1 year with my car with zero problems. crazy stuff.
