I've been working on swapping in a new short block. When I took the axles out of the tranny it was leaking oil from the both sides. Is this normal or do I need new seals? Also the transfer case leaked when I pulled out the drive shaft and the oil was gray and very little maybe a cup. It was very thick and nasty.

I am definitely going to replace the transfer case seal while I have it all apart. I've checked a bunch of parts stores around me and no one carries or will order it. Does anyone know of an online store that stocks them?

Did it leak before or after you pulled the axles? If the oil came out as you pulled the axles out, then it's normal because there is some fluid in the case at the axle level.

If everything was wet around the axle before you pulled them, replace the seals. I think mine were $17 and $21 from NAPA. I'd replace as long as you have the axles out if the car is high miles anyway.

Replace the seal on the transfer case. Do NOT let it run dry, you will smoke the case-I know first hand. It's a common problem. I'd flush it out and then refill it.

If you don't have a NAPA, do a search, there should be a Mitsu dealer in your area that could at least ship you the parts.

I didn't leak until I pulled the axles out. I just wasn't sure if that should happen or not. And there are a bunch of Napas out here so I will just try a different one. Maybe they just didn't want to order it or something.

I'm not sure if this is the right part or not. The guy from NAPA sounded confussed and didn't want to order the seal for me unless I was really sure it was the right one. Can you find the part # or tell me if this one is the right seal?

That's the rear axle pinion seal.

The one that I want to replace is the rear one one that goes out the back with the driveshaft input.

Thats not the seal you need. Her is the left axle seal- http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/n...=15519959&prmenbr=5806&usrcommgrpid=108734794

Right axle seal- http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/n...=15519919&prmenbr=5806&usrcommgrpid=108734796

Tranfer case output which is the one you were asking about- http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/n...=15518553&prmenbr=5806&usrcommgrpid=109161021

These are the same seals I purchased for my 92 awd and they fit perfect. 91 model should be the same on the axle seals unless someone swapped a 90 tranny into your car. The transfer case seal is the same on all 1g's.
