Hey guys, I just bought my98 gst a week ago. So far im loving it. It is a head turner. Now im looking into doing mods. I just ordered hids for the fogs and low beams. Now im looking into performanfe parts. As of now im planing on get the k&n fipk intake which from what I understand is just a filter and adapter for the maf. Im also looking into getting a turbo manifold and catback. This is the part im stuck on. Im used to owning a american v6 so im not sure what are good dependable brands for a Japanese turbo. My question is what are good brands that actually benefit performance and dont just look nice. And what catback would have a nice little rumble and not be loud and obnoxious like a civic?

Well before you go get a new turbo your going to want to upgrade your fuel system.

But back to your question, like the above post the Hx35 is a nice set up.
You could also check out FP one of the supporting vendors.

What are you goals as far as how much hp you want to make? I would recommend a 255lph pump with a fuel pressure regulator, maybe 550cc injectors or 650's, somthing to log with like evo scan, somthing to tune with like an safc or dsm link. But its all what you want to spend. Oh and your going to need a wideband and boost gauge.

The op asked for opinions on turbo manifold and cat back, and people are giving suggestions for everything but those :hmm:

The op also stated that he just purchased the car, from what I get from his question is he is looking at first mods.

However the first thing to do is maintenance, timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, and water pump are good things to replace. Unless the previous owner has receipts for this work recently then I wouldn't modify it until it is done.

Here is a link to the upgrade path, Tech Guide - DSMtuners

As far as manifold I would use the stock one unless it's cracked. If your set on buying a new one I'd recommend fp's cast manifold. It is on a crazy sell right now, I believe it is $75 off currently.

As far a as a catback I like thermal research, they are a bit pricy but they also sound and look great.

Lol. The first reply was a holset turbo....

I agree however that before modding you need to make sure maintenance is up to date.

With that being said, I think the best first mods are 1) air filter. Even though it won't give you measurable hp gains, its cheap and makes the turbo spool sound a lot better ;) 2) Boost controller and boost gauge. 3) Exhaust. In my opinion, if you're gonna do any exhaust, you might as well do a full exhaust. I picked up a megan racing 3" downpipe for about $100 online and then took it to a mechanic and told to him weld on some 3" pipe and a cheap muffler on it. I think i spent a total of $250 on my 3" turbo back exhaust.

After you do those mods, the next steps are gonna cost some significant $. Turbo swap which requires new fuel system and some way to tune.

I knew as soon as I seen this post it was going to end up this way.

I would of put up a list of to do's but didn't feel like typing it all out.
So to the op do what I did and when I got my fist dsm. Go to the upgrade path page
And print that page. Now you have a list of things to do for your new dsm.

Also sorry if this came out all wired I'm typing this up on my phone.

As far as a catback SRS makes one I use on my car. It's not as expensive as the rest and it sounds deep "not too loud". Also depending on your overall goals the stock manifold will most likely be ok. If not you can save for a FP or something along those lines. But I would for now go the path that mitsubishimanic just laid out for you.

Start reading and learn as much as you can about these cars first. Check out the builds and see what people are doing then decide where you want to go with yours. Get the car running good first, Maintenance is the number one thing to start with. Good luck take your time and start reading.

Honestly the best thing you could start doing is all the routine maintenance if it hasn't already been done. Fresh oil and plugs/wires filters and see about timing belt. Invest in a boost leak tester and before you jump in feet first take some time to read through the forum there is a mountain of information. Figure out which direction you want to go and research. The search button is a powerful tool. Hope this helps and good luck. -Ghost

As far as starting a build I would just take it one step at a time. Start with smaller things (like your k&n air filter your getting) then work your way up. If you don't know too much about these cars it definitely helps to get to know how they work first before you just start bolting on aftermarket parts. Maybe start by doing a tune up if the previous owner hasn't. Change spark plugs/wires, oil, etc. You can search for what's best for your dsm, and this would be the place!...as for performance parts (I suggest having the funds first...things could start breaking) I'd suggest these sites...

Hope this helps!

As a few have stated, a newer bigger turbo is not the best thing to throw on an otherwise stock car. I know it gets thrown around on the internets that "Put a bigger turbo on it, you'll go hella fast" but there has to be a lot of groundwork in place before you can safely add more boost. I would recommend setting a goal with your build, then read build journals for similar hp goals and see how other people did it. If you add boost without having enough fuel, you'll run the risk of running your engine lean which will decrease the life of your valves, rings, etc. This is why everyone is saying you should start with a W255 and an adjustable FPR, and then injectors.

What are your goals for the car?

This, and you're budget will decide on what parts you should use. Also clearly defining your goals and budget will save you a lot of time and money. Trust me I could have saved at least 1/3 the money I have spent on my car over the years if I had done a better job of this.

You mention performance parts but don't even mention what area of the car you want to increase performance in. Naturally people assume power production, if this is the case then the first thing you need to do is not supporting mods. I know that just raised some eyebrows, the first thing you need to do is check and verify all vital systems on the car, electronics and mechanics. Perform any maintenance where the car needs it, be it suspension, tires, trans, or engine.

THEN do supporting mods for an increase in power production if that is your goal. I will say it again though having clearly defined goals will save you time and money, even in something as "simple" as supporting mods, knowing what your end state goal is, will allow you to do the supporting mods more correctly the first time.

I didnt expect this much replys. As of now the car is prettg much up to date with maintenance the car currently has 81, 000 and the timing belt was changed at 60, 000 I do plan on buying a batterysoon and changing the plugs since im unsure when those were last changed. Im going to look more into what exactly I want out of the car. I was just assuming since with the other car I have the first mods are headers, intake, and catback it would be the same for a dsm. But apparently I was way wrong. Thanks for giving me a basic idea of where to start guys.

You can still do a 2.5" downpipe to a cat-back and that will help a bit. Will sound fairy nice too. Also upgrade your old rubber intercooler pipes if there not already, that will help for increased hp down the road. An injen intake works well too for my Gst also. Best of luck bud

I do know the whole ebay stuff isnt the best quality but iim going to ask anyway is this Stainless Steel Catback Cat Back Exhaust System 95 99 Eclipse Turbo 2G DSM 4g63 | eBay
A good quality cat back. Im pretty sure its not but it dosent hurt to ask.
Im also looking at that srs catback insane20 suggested with a megan racing downpipe

I will have to check the rubber pipes. Im unsure if they have been changed but it seems like a inexpensive repair. I also know the muffler and exhaust had work done less then 1, 000 miles ago

There is actually a review on that srs catback somewhere on this site but from what I hear and what I have experienced it is a good bang for your buck. I love mine it has a really nice deep sound but just dont use the stupid baffle they give you with it.

It's hilarious that the op is talking about putting an intake on and the first post is put a holset on. Upgrading DSM is pretty much like upgrading any other car. Your first upgrade on a N/A wouldn't be too slap on a turbo kit. Intake, exhaust is a good start. Since the car is already turbo no need for headers, stock exhaust mani on 2g would not need replacing for the most part it's a good solid piece.

Upgrading the intercooler piping along with the BOV (blow off valve) is good idea. Keep your upgrades simple for now until YOU feel comfortable with taking it to the next step.

I personally hate ebay products, but something like an exhaust even if it turns out to be a completely horrible product is not going to damage your motor or put you in any danger if it fails.

Haha, I thought the same when I was reading it. Gotta love the people that read a thread title, and come in and post without even reading anything in the thread!

I agree with this too. Aftermarket intake pipe, and exhaust are other good ideas, as mentioned.

Then, depending on how long you are keeping the car, get a tuning solution like DSMLink, and a wideband O2 sensor. Then, when you get familiar enough with all that, then you can start slapping the exciting parts on.
