i took out the orange bulb. It just un-screws out and the i put the LED through the hole. You are going to have to do a little cutting of the metal pieces on the LED and the resistor. The whole thing took about 45 minutes to do at most.

Good Luck:thumb:

I chose not to solder it to the wire. If you cut the metal pieces of the resistor a little shorter, you can solder it directly to the circuit board. If you look there are already a couple resistors on there from the factory. Just use the same principle....I chose to solder it on the positive side of the circuit.

Good luck, becareful:p

Has anyone tried to use theatrical lighting filters (gels) to match colors? It comes in a zillion shades and would be easy to glue onto the guage faces after you sanded off the orange. Plus you wouldn't have to worry about any wiring. Check out www.rosco.com . In the products section it shows all the colors. I used to be a lighting designer so Im thinking about trying this out, now gotta think of a unique color to do... ill see what my radio looks like when it comes in :)

Peace

I used a 5mm in there and it worked great... I have a red to replace the orange bulb in there too. Just have to play with the continuity until I figure it out and the polarity. I changed the ac button to blue but the on light to red. Just cut the green led and solder a red / blue / yellow whatever on. No resistor required because it is already on the board. Works well for the cruise too. Anyway I will have to post a pic tomorrow of the lights. I bought the autometer C2 gauges (tri-pod pillar) and they match the blue leds perfectly. Yeehaw!

Anyways until then...

nice idea for the a/c and cruise button:thumb: , i would have never thought of that.

Now.....i did the defroster button the other day and i used a 5mm 10mcd Red LED w/330 resistor and it doesn't show for shit. That was the brightest LED that radio shack had though(at least that i could see). Any ideas on what to do? Maybe a weaker resistor?

sell me your a/c button ;)

Don't reduce the resistor size. The leds are running on half resistance as it is. Most of the leds that we are installing require 660-680 resistors on a 12 volt system. (HINT: using 330 resistors now will restrict how dim you can turn your new leds. The more making it through the wire to the led the brighter it stays.) Just go to an electronic store other than radio shack. The ones that electricians go to. I even found leds that will blink red /green that will fit in the a/c button. Buy the super brights, at least 2000 mcd. The defroster and a/c main led you can get away with a lower mcd because they are bright. Brighter then the other gauges.

I will post my pics tonight. Maybe even a helper diagram for the a/c led.

Cheers

I've done every dash switch/button, changed the HVAC (complete with red side), A/C, etc. To make sure I did everything right (since it was before a lot of these posts), I just went to a junkyard and raided a Talon for dash switches. Then I practiced on those (and ended up using several).

The cruise control is one that few people do apparently. There are 4 lights in it! One bulb (for the "cruise"), two LEDs ("on" and "off") and another LED for the indicator light. In order to get the "cruise" to light up as brightly as the others, I had to build in a reflector out of tin foil and glue it in place using tweezers. Kind of like a ship-in-a-bottle sort of thing!

I am about to redo the entire dash again (already got the HVAC down) because I found a better (truer) shade of blue.

At $4 a pop for the LEDs though, you start racking up quite a bill!

IM me if you have any questions about the process.

I was testing my new a/f ratio gauge and found that when I turned on my parking lights, my ground carried a 10.5 volt charge. This can't be right. Is this normal? Everything is working normally except my damn a/f ratio gauge. Hmmm any advice.

I am going to disconnect my indiglo gauge face inverter and see if it is coming from that.

Ok, in order to wire these LEDs up, I know that the resistor goes on the positive side, but how do I know which side is positive on the LED? Does it matter?

im not sure if anyone posted this before or not, but i was wondering if there is just a blue bulb that replaces the stock...that way i dont have to go LED?

i couldn't find a bulb to replace my map lights with, so i bought this bulb paint from autospeedy.com It works okay. You just spray it on and let it dry for like a day then put it in. I have turned all my interior bulbs ot the color green with this spray. I had to redo the bulb in my trunk after like a month because i didnt close it al lthe way and the bulb stayed on for a few hours and it melted off the bulb paint.

Thought I would share this find with you guys.

http://autolumination.com/leds.html

The 194 bulbs work great, just pop out the stock bulb and pop in the new one... boom... you have LED.

Now the stock bulbs in our guage clusters are 74s and this site has LED 74 bulbs. Now I haven't tried the LEDs but I did buy the regular blue 74s (bought them before the LEDs were available) and they were too long. They fit the 74 socket and they lit up but they were too long to seat back in the cluster properly. Now the LEDs might be different and we might be able to grind the tips down if they don't fit. If someone tries this let me know.

I also replaced my dome lights with LEDs from this site. Just make sure you check the length of your dome lights so you get the right ones.

well now the only buttons i have left to do are the cigarette lighter and the cruise. Any idea on how to do the lighter?

i wonder if there is a way to subgroup this post? i read this post a long time ago all the way through, and i really dont wanna do it again. can anyone point me to the post # discussing changing the key ignition light color? i am also interested in changing the cig lighter color.
