i bought a real fidanza off ebay. install was a breeeeeeze, and the throw is noticably shorter. although it doesn't sit much lower as i had hoped. still, under 100 bucks, easy install, it has lasted about 10 months, and i haven't touched it since it went in. i've been happy with my fidanza, so i would suggest it. althought the real b&m is very nice and very tempting.

can you give me the link to the one you bought

I have the B&M on mine and i love it.
Dont mind spending the few extra $ for something i know works.
Cant go wrong with the B&M.

Im not sure about the Fidanza, but the B&M shifter, you can have a 30-50%throw reduction depending on how it is set up.

Out of curiosity, my car is kind of hard to get into gear, its very notchy, so would the BM short shifter still work good?

Your install of a short shifter will not affect your transmission being notchy. You can try the under hood cable bearing mod or the shifter base washer mod to see if it helps.

The fidanza short shifter has no stop on it for shifting up and down, and there have been reports of damage to the shift fork when ripping it around hard.

I'm lookin into buying a short throw shifter for my car and I know how good Fidanza is but my car is a 1990 Talon TSI and they said it won't fit my car. I was wondering if there would be any way to get the Fidanza to fit even if I have to do some custom work. Need some input guys. Thanks

Any short shifter for the 1990's will take some work to make it fit but it's doable. As an alternative you may want to chop an inch out of the shift lever itself. While it maintains the same OEM throw, the lowered height gives the impression of faster shifting since the level isn't as tall.

Just make sure that you cut from the middle and re-weld the threaded top piece properly. Any muffler shop should be able to weld it for you and it's a cheap fix. You may also with to run a 2G OEM shifter knob or something like the Greddy since it's not as tall.

Hope that helps,

Andy

I plan on doing the same thing to mine and I have the B&M set to 50% throw but it's just too tall for my taste.

Post up some pics when you get it done so we can see the difference.

Just cutting it down alone is just going to make the knob height shorter, to shorten the throw you need to change the pivot point. Let's say you want a 2"shorter throw, take the shifter and cut it right where the pivot ball and the top half meet (right above the pivot ball), then take the top part you just cut off and cut 2" off that, put the little 2" piece aside you will need it later, then re-weld the shortened part of the shifter back on the pivot ball. then take the shifter and cut just below the pivot ball...take the 2" piece the you cut off earlier and weld it to the pivot ball where you just cut off the bottom portion then reweld the the bottom portion to the 2" piece you just welded back on.

Now what you should have done if you did it right is shortened the shifter above the pivot ball 2" and lengthened the shifter below the ball 2". Oh and FYI that is all a short shifter that you would buy for $100 is. they just make the top shorter and the bottom longer therefore changing the pivot point in turn shortening the throw.

:dsm:

Or you could save up and buy a properly made one from JNZ tuning. I've heard theirs are really good. You can also get a shorter stick with a shorter throw. Or stock height.

Actually, just cutting out an inch of the top shaft *will* shorten the throw. Your hand will travel less with a shorter top half, even without lengthening the bottom/altering the pivot. The pivot will move just as many degrees, but with a shorter shaft, the endpoint travel (aka: throw) is less.

Also, just cutting down the top half retains your OEM shifter assembly bump stops... very important, as over-extending a shift fork is a very easy way to bone your tranny, since as I read it, there are no internal stops.

why buy a short shift if you can do t your own?

my short shifter on my car is home made and works perfect like a short shifter you buy. i had it on my car for 2 years already and did not give any problem.

all you need is a drill.

if you want to know how hit me back.

It won't hurt anything cutting down like that and welding it ? will it be weakened because of the weld or if snapping your shifter pretty much impossible

If you snap your welded shifter than:

1. You go and smack the guy that welded it. He/she did a HORRIBLE job.
2. You save up for some new shifter cable and some other parts because your strong-ass self definitely broke more than the shifter. But I'm sure that strength could win you some bar bets, too.

It doesn't shorten the throw.

Please explain...
It does just as Talesin says. Although the reduction in throw will not be dramatically different and I'm not sure if it is even worth the effort, it will decrease the throw.

It doesn't actually decrease the throw though. It's been talked before, search for it. A 5% less degree of throw is nothing. I say do it the right way, nor not at all.

Even if it doesn't reduce the throw it may be worth doing just for comfort for my hand and arm. My friend is a really good welder so i really wouldn't have to worry bout it breaking. He got bored and welded a rod to his shifter 1 take LOL. It was funny looking, but worked fine. He took it off the next day. I dunoo i may do this later on if he gets some extra time.

i have been searching the forums for an answer but no luck. i saw that the fidanza shifter needs drilling and a bolt to be put in for shifting stop. i need to know if anybody knows where to put that bolt????????:dsm:

take both pieces, stock and fidanza and align them by their middle holes, you can stick a metal rod through both of them if you want to make sure they don't move, then drill a hole in th fidanza piece that is at the same location as the stock piece. Sorry it's hard to describe without pictures, but I think you'll know what I mean!
