I'm building my wishlist of mods for this project and, after much research, I realize that there aren't many manifold with an external wastegate flange. Let me explain myself better. For what I can see most of the manifolds with external wastegate setups are tubular. Thus making them expensive and prone to cracking. There is that cast turbonetics one, but for what I have read here, it doesn't fit all that well on a 1g. I want to go external because i've read here it reduces boost creep. questions?

1. Besides the one mentioned; What cast manifolds with external setup are available on the market?

2. Can a cast manifold be modified to fit this set-up?

3. What is the alternative/popular external wastegate set-up?

Thanks for reading! :talon: :)

slowboy racing sells a cast manifold that is flanged for a 38mm TiAl on the #1 runner. It's a nice piece, and decently effective.

I would rather have a gate off of the manifold collector, or the o2 housing, as they are simply a bit better at relieving the gasses.

with an external off of the o2, you either need a turbo like the FP 3052/3065/3575 that has a vband flange for the wastegate there (very slick) or you need to build an o2 eliminator housing that has a gate on it. If you do that, you can simply run a turbo that is normally internally gated quite easily, but it does need some modification to prevent creep. I have run an HKS 40mm on the o2 housing with a 14b. I removed the flapper, and then had my machinist remove almost all of the material around where the flapper sits in the housing. I have pics of it in my gallery.

If you run off of the collector (or the #1 runner) you need a turbo that doesn't have a wastegate passage in it, or you need a turbo that you can seal it off. Welding the flapper shut is generally good enough, from what I've seen.

Easiest is probably to go with an SBR manifold & 38mm gate, and it is quite popular- it also gives a very unique sound when it opens, since it's on the runner, rather than the collector.

1. SBR cast manifold. The product just speaks for its self. Great product!!!:thumb:
2. Yes, SBR.
3. SBR w/ Tial 38mm.

Go check out SBR's cast manifold on slowboyracing.com

Stay boostin

Yes. I have a Tial 38mm flange welded onto my ported 2G manifold.

The most popular external set-up seems to be a 38mm Tial gate mounted on the #1 runner of the manifold. There are however many different gates you can use and you can mount it in a few different places other than the #1 runner.

Outstanding!!! I appreciate the help. I kind of feel stupid, because I have been to the SBR site and not seen that maifold. I've seen it now, not bad. To summarise:

SBR cast or weld it to my OEM on the #1 runner; or use a turbo with a v-band flange (I think bullseye has one too, and now i know what that v-band option means :p ) and run off the 02; weld shutter and run off o2 with o2 eliminator housing? right?

Mad props to all that answered. All great answers :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

i don't know about the manifold but if you don't have strict emission laws vent your external waste gate when it opens its like your running a open header. but only if you won't get fined for it. here in Ky they could care less and they wouldn't know what the thing does anyway. just make sure you run the pipe to were its getting out of the engine bay mine dumps under the tranny.

I looked in that DNP site, but it seems they only have tubular manifolds. I like the SBR unit. Not a bad price at all.
Venting that Wastegate here in Germany is a bad, bad idea! These folks here are very environment friendly. I plan to weld a tube to the downpipe. I know... kind of hard. I have a co-worker with a tig that will weld the crap out of anything for a bottle of vodka! :D

Gotta love them drunks! :)

Just to let all you know I just picked one of these up and the holes for the screws that hold the wastegate on. They didnt line up and they wernt drilled straight or deep enough so be ready for some fun. I found out after I put the manifold on.
