Turbo set up w/ External wastegate

Hello, i have a forced performance 16g on my 1g dsm. it has a internal wastegate. i however would like an external wastegate. my question is, is there anyway to convert it over? or do i have to buy a whole new set up. i would really like to try and use the turbo i already have because it is pretty much brand new. and helpful hints or tips would be great!

A new o2 housing and or new manifold with the external provision is in your future..

Not too hard, you just need some new parts..Your not the guy I was texting a couple days ago was it?
 
IMO, there is no need to go external on a 16g even at 20+ psi.

I run 25 on my e3 big 16g on an internal with no problems.

But if you want it bud92 is right. You'll need a manifold with flange or 02 housing with provisions for external gate. Plus the actual wastegate itself and, possibly, a dump tube. Then remove the inbternal waste gate and have the flapper welded shut. Its fairly simple.

Really not a cheap upgrade to do just for kicks though.
 
could you throw up some links for the parts i might need? and i dont know, probably LOL. im selling a talon shell and the shell that was my gsx in my avatar pic.

and honestly, i just think they look and sound badass. :D
 
I was looking this up the other day for a 14b. I came up with

To run a Wastegate off the manifold would mean you have to weld the Wastegate flapper shut,

To run a Wastegate off the o2 would mean you remove the flapper, but you'd have to weld the flapper arm hole shut.

techlogic89<-- thanks for the insight, and yeah, i would most likely just be doing it for kicks. i have no problems with my internal waste gate, im building my 90 talon and i have the motor up on the stand so i figured why its out id slap some new parts on it.

You guys have this exactly backwards as usual.. Low boost on a small turbo is a great application for a larger external gate.

More boost means less turbine bypass/waste-gating is needed. In which case sticking with the small creep-prone internal gate makes more sense.

If the OP is looking to keep boost low on a small turbo, a larger external gate would be advisable as more exhaust needs to be routed around the turbine wheel.

Keeping the internal gate, you could port the lip over the wastegate hole in the turbine volute, and the port its self, leaving some meat intact for the flapper to seat over it and seal. Then running a dumped O2 housing.

An external gate can be run two ways. One being off the manifold, the other uses the O2 housing. Whether you recirculate or dump at that point is up to you.

Both methods would involve modifying your new turbo.. you would have to remove the internal flapper and port the hole to the diameter of the dump pipe to run off the O2 housing.

To run off the manifold you would be best suited to remove the stock actuator and weld the port closed.
 
It will also be good to have an external setup if your planning on upgrading your turbo later.
So from that stand point it's a great idea.

You can shim it or get a stronger actuator.

When I was running the S200sx with the bolt-on housing Bill @ BEP sent me an OE Borg actuator you could hang a small child off of. Good for almost 40psi with a dumped housing and a 38mm internal valve at 9k rpm.

It will also be good to have an external setup if your planning on upgrading your turbo later.
So from that stand point it's a great idea.

You know, unless you are changing to a T3 or T4 turbo. Then your modded stock manifold and/or O2 housing are of no use and you just wasted money on building them only to sell for a fraction of what they cost and negligible benefit.

see, i was wondering this too...like, what if the weld was to break & the the flapper got free from the weld?

i made the mistake of buying parts before getting my motor & figuring out how much power/boost/CR i want to run. i know i want to run 8.5:1, 14.5-21.75psi, & 300-400whp...i'm sure i could run the IG but i've heard of e3 16g's creeping at similar boost levels, so i just want to take some extra precautions with my planned setup.

items in my possession (of relevance)-
'92 6-bolt GS-T motor w/ 64k miles (turbo & ex mani didn't come with it, salvage yard motor)
Equal Length mani for MHI-style flanged turbo's w/ a 2-bolt external WG provision
evo 3 16G w/ stock o2 housing
SS o2 housing for 16G w/ TiAL F41 (seller tossed this in for an extra $100 when i bought the mani off him)
