Ok I just bought a 95 TSI AWD which needs to be towed 400 miles(blown headgasket and I'll be damned before I pay someone to do something I can do) and I don't have the cash for a flatbed and my trucks 300lbs to light to use a transport. So I've read everything topic on towing awd but noones really explained why can't I just disattach the driveshaft. I know you'll heat your vc/lsd but why? Are the four wheels connected? Also is that just for 1g's or 2g's as well? I just don't understand and would hope someone could explain it to me. I would love to find something that has the rear dollys too but you can't find those anywhere and I'm pissed uhaul won't let me use the damn transport. What I don't understand that if you unbolt the driveshaft why would the lsd still heat up.

you cannot just disconnect your drive shaft unless you want to replace your 400 dollar viscous coupling. if you disconnect your drive shaft if will overheat your viscous and there fore ruining it. if you are going to tow it get a flat bed.

NO, If you disconnect your rear drive shaft then your trans is not goning to know the rear is turning and your viscous WONT EVEN MOVE unless the front wheels turn!!! The only thing I can see is if we had slip fit rears like at our transfer case at the rear. Then if you pulled out the drive shaft from the rear you could lose fluid, But we have bolt ups. I dont know EVerything about lsd but as far as i know i thought the rear was lsd for left to right. and the viscous did front to back. So there should be no problem with unbolting the rear drive shaft cuz then your trany will never see anything when its on a tow dolly.
