i've been debating between these 2 turbos for a while now. I'm going to be using this car as a DD and occasionally at the track. Supporting Mods will be a FULL fuel system, exhaust & DP, BOV, and a FMIC. Eventually i will be looking at pistons, Cams, and a DSM link.

Which turbo would you guys say is the best choice for my situation?

Okay, look on the site here, the fastest times with the EVO III BIG 16g is 11 seconds... that is well over 350+ whp that everyone is knocking on the turbo. Unless you have done it like these guys have, dont give out hearsay and bullsh*t.... I agree, the numbers dont lie, but they even made 400+ WHP on a scion, so with our cars, through trial and error, it should easily make that. Like someone said earlier, a great tune does wonders, not just the mods.... THe mods help, but so does a tune. That would be like buying a new pair of the lightest shoes that make you run faster, but then you dont tie your laces and go running, its the same concept here... if you have all the power, but no control, you wont get it.... obviously.... I love the EVO III, and yes, I do plan on upgrading to a 20G sometime, but I am still pondering all of this....

Exactly my point.... Before I first bought the car, it was pushing a over 425 WHP and 435 ft-lbs TQ, with some of the mods I have on now and the same turbo. The guy before me had a whole fuel system on it, with 650's, a 255HP, AFPR, and an SAFC-II, but I got rid of the SAFC and went with DSM Link, and he got rid of the fuel system, and put back on the brand new stockers due to the fact him and I had a deal, let him sell the fuel system, and I will keep the turbo and the mods.... He had a 14b, strut bars, a 3.5" intake, and an Ebay exhaust... All of these which I have sold to buy my new EVO III Big16G, and all the other parts I have bought up until now, and I completely redid all the others too, like the engine and suspension.... Like he said, its how you make them work together, and I did it... You can make over 400 WHP with an EVo III, I did it.... so can you....

It is not exactly the same, but compared to a regular non-ball bearing 50 trim, the BB spools fast.

EVO III 16G Turbo at 21psi - 3500 rpm
SBR G50 Trim at 21 psi - 4100 rpm
PTE Dual BB at 21 psi - 3800 rpm

Spool up on 2.0L with mild mods
EVO3-16G - 2900 RPM
5031RE - 3200 RPM (Dual ball bearing 50 trim)
5031E - 3500 RPM (Non-ball bearing 50 trim)

You have to mention the gear that the test was done in because the spoolup RPM for a given setup will be different in every gear.

I agree. The largest component to performance is volumetric efficiency. I used to build 5.0's and I'd see guys with stock bottom ends and heads with huge intakes running slower than you can imagine. While the turbo overcomes some of this, ignoring tuning and VE is an instant recipe for disappointment.

Evo 3 is a nice turbo. I have it on my daily driver 1G. I just made 310 to the wheels at 20psi on a very safe tune. Full spool with a FMIC is 3100rpms and even lower in 4th/5th gear.

It's a great turbo.. I can still squeeze more out of my setup, but it's fine right now. Eventually I will go bigger - but like I said -this one's fun :)

Good luck

Same with me, but I just put the stock specs on my profile for this reason... People always ask me, "How do you get such low HP and TQ with all those mods?" I just tell 'em its a secret, plus there are no AWD dynos here in NC where I am at, but they are back home in INDY, but whatever....

So if I understand what you guys are saying, if my friend were to purchase this kit he would not need to do any porting?

The only thing ported in that kit is the exhaust manifold, which is ported to a 7cm gasket. He would still need to port the turbo and his o2 housing if he plans to run low boost and not want to get boost creep.
