I'm buying a evo 16g from turbochargers.com They give you the choice of the 16G or the 16g GT version. I was wondering what you guys thing about the GT version. Is it as well made as the 16G? They have a page on their website defending the negative remarks about the GT, but I want to know what you thing about it.

Nope. But probably the first that cares so much. But I do see the relevence. It is a great way to get the most out of any turbo... But saying that you run 32 psi and adding nothing to that is a little msleading. Don't you think?

Alot of turbos have thicker blades than the MHI EVO3.

Look I'll just let it be that we don't have a compressor map for the GT turbo. This debate between the MHI and GT turbos is one HUGE bench race where there are no staging lights, no lazers at the end of the track, no timeslips.

Look in this thread. I always state that the boost falls as the engine revs.

My point about thicker blades is that the area taken up by the cross section of the blade doesn't flow any air. So if you have two identical compressors but one has thicker blades, the one with thinner blades has more area to flow air.

AH! so you're talking about identical compressor wheels.
 
11.82 et with a evo3 is awsome, beats the mess out of a certain s'charged mustang i know.

Here are three DSMLink datalogs. One is of my best E/T, and the other is of my best mph.

The Josh_16G_118mph log is the one where I recorded 44.1lb/min airflow from the Evo III when I accidentally turned up the boost a lot higher than I meant to. I'm glad I made that mistake. :D

I just picked up the GT. I got it last Wednesday from turbochargers.com. Some notable items:


1. I got the 2G install setup w/ mani, lines and gaskets for my 1G car.

2. I was not happy with the packing job. All the items were in one box that originally housed cheesecakes from somewhere in Houston, TX.

3. The manifold needs the end of it trimmed to fit on the driver side; the power steering pump bracket is in the way (no big deal).

4. The GT manifold flange is thicker, the studs seem too short for some reason. I'm going to replace all the studs in the near future.

5. They should really include a blockoff plug for the original oil feed for the head, as I had to try a couple of methods to get it to seal. Also, one of the previous owners helicoiled the hole and did a crappy job of it.

6. This turbo exhibited no signs of excessive shaft play. I've bought probably a half dozen turbos in the past three years, and this seemed no different than the rest.

I purchased the turbo because the 14B I had checked out, CHRA seized up something fierce. I installed the turbo over the span of several days while I worked out little bugs from the car itself, like botched cooling lines and such. The car had a starting issue which I found was the ECU Coolant Temp sensor, but as I installed it I realized the harness was shot. Someone hacked this car up a lot.

Anyways, I drove the car around yesterday. I'm on stock boost and injectors and I am pleased with it. It spikes a bit, up to 15, but then drops and holds at the stock pressure. When I first took the car off the block, it spiked to about 22 psi but I think that was the wastegate sticking. It's been perfect since.

I've only mananged to put about 15 miles on it. Mostly because I broke the rear u-joint (I hate having a welded center diff) and it ate up the rear of the driveshaft plus did some tasteful redecorating under the car. I've got another driveshaft on the way, and then I'll do some more testing of the car. I'm planning for injectors (650's) and DSMlink in the next few weeks, I've already got a Walbro intank and ACT 2600 in the car (bought it like that).

I'll post updates on it once the car is going again. It's got some serious demons in it that I need to get rid of. Just one thing at a time. The wife wants her car done already. And I intend on keeping her happy. :)
 
Wow another MHI vs GT debate.
These are getting rediculous.

The only reason I even tried the GT turbo was my MHI one went bad within 1k miles.
Of coarse there is no warrenty on MHI ones.
So I desided to give this GT one a try. It had a 12/12 warrenty incase it was crap and in the mean time I could do a experament of my own.
Most people always want to blame a turbo going bad on the turbo. And it generally isnt the turbos fault. So mant things can cause a turbo to fail.I will say I believe my MHI one went bad because of a Type R bov that was to tight. I cant prove that but its my belief.

On to air flow. The gm mas i used with dsm link is not real acurate. That is why I never gave the actual number. But what i did see was the GT turbo was showing a higher airflow number than the MHI one all else being equal. Although slightly inflated i am sure but so was the mhi`s airflow number. It sort of like the dyno. Your not so much looking for a exact hp number as you are looking to see a improvement from your first pull.

I have said many times. My recomendation to any one looking for a evo316g. Buy the one that makes you feel comfortable. If the thought of a 12 month 12k mile warrenty does it for you get the GT.
If the tried and true MHI one makes you feel more comfortable then get that one.
I can honestly say you will love the way your car feels either way.
I wish I had spent more time with it. I know I could have gone low 11`s at just over 120mph.
It would go 11.4-11.5 @ 119 with it breaking up just past the 1000ft mark.(stupid fuel pump oring)
I have managed to keep my car mitsu bolt on even with my new turbo(gt35)
I am seriuosly considering getting another evo316g to play with. It would very easy to just pull the gt35 off and put the 16g on.
Nothing else would have to be change. Going fast with small turbo`s is cool.:thumb:

Way better than a 50 trim.:D
 
You will always see debates about one turbo over the other.

For what I paid for it, I'm happy. The kit was fairly complete for what I needed. I reused the stock water lines; they included new copper crush washer for them. New oil feed and returns will the necessary fittings. All the gaskets I needed. A manifold that's not all cracked up like my 1G mani was, An EGT fitting in the new mani. Not bad for $730 shipped.

In the end, it is what works for the individual. Like it has been said, there are plenty of things that can cause a turbo to fail but the first thought is always that the turbo is junk, especially in the case of the GT since it's new.
 
Ok it feels i have to post in here, i bought a GT from TC.com, about a 1yr2months ago, had it in my car for 1yr1month yes thats right 1yr1month and guess what nothing wrong with it. boosting about 19psi, daily driver work home school, and spirited drives mostly everyday. i took it off to sell it to a friend not that long ago, because i want to go bigger. but no complaints about it. i had a real MHI but i blew it (user error, my fault), but i decided to go with gt. i seriously believe that its about the same, if not better. BUT! one thing, it did seem that it wanted to run out of breathe before the real MHI.

Update: I had my Evo III GT replaced by Turbochargers.com under warranty. They sent me a new unit in its place. As far as why the turbo failed, it was labeled as "Defective Center Cartridge". There was no other information other than that. They also have not sent me the $100.00 warranty check, and I can't find it on their website anymore. I'll post back if they make good on it. In the meantime, my MHI Evo III has been doing very well.

I just made the mistake of buying the GT turbo off of ssautochrome (EBAY). It is puking oil out of the cold side, ssautochrome said they wouldn't warranty it because it is a $2 seal. I have only put about 500 miles on it @ 7psi. I told them it should be under warranty because i don't want to tear this new turbo apart. They even give a 30 day warranty against defects They should at least stand behind that.

I just wanted to add that the mistake was buying it from ssautochrome. I was pleased with the performance of the turbo and i understand that sometimes things go wrong. Next time i will be sure to buy anything from turbochargers.com
 
Is turbochargers.com a realiable company that sells quality products? Im looking to upgrade to the evo 3 and i found these 2 on there web site. Whats the difference between these turbos 2 turbos?

Also i noticed the install kit is 150 which is alot, Most of that stuff looks like you can buy from a auto parts store for less. Has anyone done this or do you just buy the kit to?
 
$150 is not a lot. The two most expensive pieces are the j-pipe and the oil line. Purchased separately, they would cost about $130. That leaves about $20 to buy all the screws, gaskets and other parts.

Unless you really know what you are doing, don't short cut on things like this. Not having the right gasket or crush washer when you need it can set you back hours or days.
 
As far as reputable. I have ordered from there before and been satisfied with service, delievery, and product.
 
Turbochargers.com is a very reputable company. I've looked into buying the Evo 3 Gt 16g also and found many people claiming it to be a horrible investment. Do some research on that turbo before making up your mind.

The first is the old stand by big 16g, proven performance, probably maxes out somewhere around 380hp.

The second is the knock-off of the new and improved MHI EvoIII 16g. It is NOT made by mitsu, but it is claimed to perform as well as if not better than the MHI Evo. I'm sure a lot of people would like to know if this is really true, but the jury's is still out. Some people swear it is as good as the MHI and others swear they would never put it on their car. One thing is sure, the real MHI Evo 16g is better than the old big 16g, it spools faster and has the same power potential, SBR made 400hp on it with an uber engine. So, is the knock-off better/more reliable than the old big 16g? It is claimed to be.

Don't gamble your money on the Fake EVO3 Turbo, go MHI.

Yes some people fab their own install kit to put the EVO3 on a 2G. You will need to search, as will all know it's here and none of uus want to search it for you LOL.

Decide for yourself after you research it whether to buy the install kit or make your own.
 
Have had my turbo on for about a month now. No issues, boosting happily. Need to get some more mods going on so I can turn it up further. :)
 
im planning on ordering the 2g solution tomorrow morning so i will fill everyone in with a lot of details once it arrives. Im curious does anyone know the most hp made on the gt. I know slowboy made 400 on the plain evo 3.?
