Evo 8 ECU in 1g to check CEL codes?

Hey guys i have an evo 8 ecu w/ DSM link in my 2g and my buddy has a 1g laser turbo, can i throw my ecu in his car and hook up link to see what CEL his car is throwing?
 
If you have a local Advanced auto you can check the CEL for free at the store, or you can get a code reader there for a small price to see.

Can i pull the ECU out of the car and take it in or does the whole car need to be there? Its running pretty rough right now.

Also, how the heck did you get DSMLink to with with an EVO8 ECU? I thought DSMLink was only for the EPROM DSM ECU's...

Bought the car and ECU from Jacks Transmissions here in Colorado, i was told its a socketed evo 8 ecu, either way it works just fine!
 
If you've got DSMLink you don't have an EVO 8 ECU. If your ECU is socketed you don't have an Evo 8 ECU. The Evo 8 ECU's are flashable plastic ECUs -- totally different than the ECUs that use DSM Link.

The wiring is totally different so you can't put your ECU directly into his car. Even if you could, how would you expect to get the code from his ECU if you remove it and put yours in? He can check his codes with just a volt meter, or a $20 logging cable, so why bother?

Yes you can pull out the ECU. No you won't get any codes off of it then, because the codes are gone once the ECU loses power.

We were just trying to check the codes without spending any money or driving the car anywhere. Thanks again for all the great info guys.

Well you should be able to come up with an analog volt meter to check the codes.

The Codes are in the Tech Forums I found it the other day and it really helped out alot.

I used a DVOM with a continuity buzzer on it. Counting the Tones will get you where you need to be.

Looking for an OHM's resistance table for the sensors currently.
